I'm still undecided whether to describe my novel set 1981-1984 as "period" or "historical." I say it's set at the "end of the predigital epoch and beginning of the neopuritan era."
I use archetypes (as described by Linda Goodman) to help in inventing characters' personalities, but I never mention astrology in my stories. Nor do I necessarily give the characters a birthday to fit. I don't mean to imply causality.

Isn't it the same kind of thing? Diacritics are only decoration in the US, as you of all people here know well. Elsewhere they distinguish words and letters.
