    Scenes with frantic-paced action

I've never been particularly good at these either. BUT, I do know that what both Homer and Banespawn said are true. I've also found that allowing the author the opportunity to fill in the gaps works wonderfully. Give them enough to help them imagine it, but really let their minds find a wayto...

    The artistic experience

I was listening to a Mark Forsyth interview this weekend. He's the author of Elements of Eloquence, which, if you haven't read it, it's a wonderful book and definitely has made me really take a second look at how my voice sounds in my writing. Anyways, he explained that writing to him is like...

    The Writer's Block Thread

Another thought just occurred to me... sometimes when I'm not writing and I've got a few minutes I'll listen to a "writer's advice" video on YouTube. There are lots of them out there. I could recommend a few I follow but really, any of them will do. Most of them talk about the theory of writing...

Which villain would you have a drink with?

Willy Wonka. And if you don't think he's the villain, you didn't understand the story. 😅

    First Line of a Book

100%!! This is my favorite first line. I'm not sold that the first line will make or break the story, but I do know that a first line can enhance it! I love the ones that catch you off-guard. 1984 is a great example with the clock striking 13.

I am so mad at myself....is there technology that helps with COMPELLING storytelling???

The first six novels I wrote, hated, and have never looked back. I hated writing them then and I don't honestly know why I kept writing. After those first 6 novels I just kept writing scenes. Nothing I wrote could ever have turned into a book. It was about the craft and I started to love writing...

    Hierarchy in the writing world

Are you talking about Agents, Editors, Publishers, etc. and how they all fit together? Like, can you skip the agents and editors and go straight to the publishers?

    The Writer's Block Thread

WOW, isn't that the truth!!! I think everyone would love to be the next JK Rowling or Brandon Sanderson and make lots of money... but I'm very much content writing stories I wish I had when I was a teenager. Who knows, maybe I'll be like Van Gogh and one day they;ll discover my stuff and love...

    What are you reading?

Just finished the 1st Heirachy book "The Will of the many" by James Islington. Pretty good read. I'll read the next book that just came out. Took me a little bit to get into but enjoyed it throughout. Felt like a "Ender's Game" "Harry Potter" young man out of his elements trying to make it...

How many times do you edit a draft before you leave it? The Editing Process.

If you're like me, I never think I'm done. I'll continue to revise until an editor touches it and then I leave it. I make that my "the profession said it was ready" and I no longer touch it. In general, I would say I go over each chapter about 4-6 times. 1st time to just read it for...

Guided Writing Exercises? Or jump right into writing stories?

It might be a little unorthodox but sometimes I just write a scene. No real background, no real character development, just a scene. It's kind of a practice in writing. Some of those "prompt" books are good where they tell you to write a short story about ____. I have had a few really great...
