  • English language - is the language of old Egypt (the center of the ancient world)?

I have to add that many languages were spoken in ancient Egypt: Egyptian and Greek, of course, but also Aramaic, Phoenician and Armenian. (Caveat: I'm only defining "ancient Egypt" in terms of the period after Alexander the Great's visit). But other Mediterranean languages were spoken there for a LONG time beforehand, seeing as it was a centre of trade.

One other point: "old Egypt" (whatever that means) was A centre of the ancient world, not THE centre. There were plenty of places in the ancient world that were just as important (e.g. in Persia, India, or the Far East).

Also, what is "old Egypt"? Are we talking Old Kingdom? New Kingdom? Middle Kingdom? The Intermediate Periods? Define, please.

One final point (oh, thank god! ;) ): whichever period we're talking about, the English language came about much, much later and in another part of the world. (Also, it was Old English). So the question makes no sense.

Sorry for the multi-posts, but I studied the ancient world for decades, and it's impossible to condense all that into one tiny post. :)

one of my characters says that his favourite sentences are "I have a job for you" "F*** me its unlocked" and "my husband's not home"... while the three greatest lies of all time are "of course i love you baby" "i'll pay you back, promise" and "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you"
