Character created by Louanne Learning
Name: Malina Ivalu
Male or female: Female
Age: 25
Inuit-Canadian, Non-Inuit Canadian, American, or Other (please specify)? Inuit
Physical appearance (no images please):
Malina is an attractive young Inuk woman, with long, straight black hair, round face with full lips, a button nose, and sparkling dark eyes that squint when she smiles, which is often. Of medium height and slender, she tends to dress down comfortably, preferring yoga pants and loose T-shirts. Her movements are slow and graceful.
Backstory:
Malina has lived in Qangata all of her life. She was raised in a typical, low, square bungalow, by loving parents who infused the story-telling tradition in her. She loved hearing about her ancestors and their exploits, and soon began to write her own stories and poetry, using similar themes.
At the age of twelve, her mother signed her up at the local community gallery—The Aputik Gallery—for ceramics lessons. Malina never looked back. Hooked on sculpture, bringing both spiritual and visionary gifts to her artwork, her skills developed rapidly, and she now splits her time at the gallery between creating and teaching art.
Personality:
Introspective and thoughtful, Malina never rushes. She is loyal, kind and generous, and a good listener, but tends to lose patience with those who do not learn from their mistakes. She is fiercely attached to her heritage, and she credits her wicked sense of humour to it.
She is the oldest of six siblings, so that has tended to give her a take-charge attitude.
Other information:
Malina is unattached, and doesn’t make a lot of time for dating. Between writing, creating sculptures, and running classes at the gallery, her days are full.
