Question for hunters

Say kill a dear or [insert game animal].
You've hunted it on foot, now you have the carcass. do you bleed it, gut it, strip it and cut it up where you are?

Say you are not a modern hunter (no 4 wheeler to carry it back on and miles away from civilization, and too far from camp to drag it back before dark)
Would you just take what you can carry? take the most important bits?

mostly if you areent a modern hunter you'd have either a pack animal/canoe/ help from your friends, tribe or whatever.. in practical terms two men can sling a deer out on a pole.

that aside if you're hunting for survival not for sport you want to take the meat - probably take the legs entire and strip from back and belly, and the hide for clothing.

another option especially if youve killed more than one is to camp where the kills are till you've processed the meat - although thatr does raise the issue of the carcases atracting predators/scavengers

Thanks!

In this case, 3 brothers went out to track down a stray "ram" that had gotten displaced in a storm. They came across it badly injured and they had to put it down. But... it doesnt make sense to just leave the carcass. especially if its a fresh kill, and has wool, horns, and meat of which they could bring back.

that aside if you're hunting for survival not for sport you want to take the meat - probably take the legs entire and strip from back and belly, and the hide for clothing.

this, i think, would fit the situation

There are a lot of different things you can do depending on the terrain, the season, and the weather that day. I immediately bleed the animal out. I won't go into removing the internals for now, but once they have been removed I will pack it with snow and Icut around each hoof supposedly to let poisons escape. I was taught that early and never challenged it. If I'm on foot I will quarter the animal to take him back to camp using several trips. Once an animal is down; wolves, coyotes and bears will come to the site, so your on a time table to get your share.

With 3 brothers, they should be able to carry out a quartered ram no problem, and that is the most common way to pack an animal out. Depending on where you are, you want to get what you're keeping away from the kill site, internals, etc. before the predators come.
