In case this is of any interest to anyone here:

As the name suggests, it's open to science fiction, from 1500-5000 words. It charges an entry fee, unless you're under 21 though. Open until 8th of July.

It's not Sci-fi only according to the FAQ.

Do I have to write a sci-fi story (like HG Wells)?

"No. Your story can be set anywhere, feature any characters, and be written in any style."

Thanks for the heads up, I've just started re-reading The Invisible Man as of yesterday, so that's good timing.

I might give it a go.

I'm tempted to - IF I can come up with a suitable idea!
Wells himself gives me a couple of ideas - not to attempt to write anything thematically or stylistically in his vein, but just from geography.

I haven't been back in over a decade, but I spent the first 30 years of my life in 'war of the worlds' country. Right in the middle of a cluster of Martian landing sites - the closest being just over the Thames in Bushy Park.

These days I orient myself by the coast, but back then it was always the river. I'll see if it whispers anything to me.
