Parents, how and when do you write?

As someone else trying to fit writing in around life, here is what I find helpful. A lot of the writing process happens in my head, figuring out what characters need to do or say. Think about these elements while doing other mundane tasks, so that when you sit down to put words on the page...

    The General Writing Advice Thread!

It could be argued (but please, I'm not trying to start an actual argument) that you are writing for, in abstract, an audience of one--the magazine. you know, as a collective entity, what they like. I think the advice holds, though doesn't necessitate the audience being the same for each...

    The General Writing Advice Thread!

Write every day. Doesn't matter what it is, just get words on the page. I strive to this end, though it is not always achieved.

What Does Underwriting Mean to You?

I feel like this is the common sentiment. I wouldn't call it a deficiency, merely a state of draft. I do think stories tend to have a natural length, and forcing them into a less natural space can lessen their effect, as has been suggested.

    AI in writing software

I'm sorry, I clearly did not articulate my point well enough and have been misunderstood. Yes it is copyright infringement and illegal. What I was suggesting is that, if anyone is determined enough, you cannot prevent them from copying (stealing) any work available to them. This relates to AI...

    AI in writing software

I think it remains very difficult in this current era of cloud everything to keep your data out of corporate reach. What they do with it today may be different from what they do with it next year, but they already have it to do whatever. From this list I'd say your safest bet is libre Office...

    Brainstorming character ideas

A bit late to the party, I know, but this thread just popped up and grabbed my attention, so thought I would offer a suggestion. Similarly to this, I sometimes deliberately create a few different, alternate versions of a character, try writing a scene or a conversation with each, see how they...

Tell Us About Your Writing Set Up

I primarily use a desktop with a couple large monitors and a nice mechanical keyboard. Comfort first, is the lesson I have learned over the years. I used to like writing by hand but my penmanship is not what it once was - that is to say, it has gone from bad to worse. Perhaps atrophied from...

    What's your backup strategy?

... more than a few ... Everything important is saved to a local NAS and synced to cloud storage, the cloud system runs a daily/monthly backup cycle. I am somewhat of a data hoarder.

    Describing What’s Absent

The lack or suppression of an expected or "normal" response to stimuli can often say more about a character than they would like to reveal. It's a tactic I enjoy.
