How to avoid tropes and cliches?

I had an idea where a zombie rockstar resurrects the dead with a mystical guitar. A 'Return of the Living Dead' kind of deal.

How to avoid tropes and cliches?

Wow, there are a lot of valuable insights and opinions here. Thanks, guys. Maybe we just have fun with our writing and not worry too much.

How to avoid tropes and cliches?

TBH when people on the internet criticise movies or tv episodes for 'Cliches and tropes' I just think 'For god's sakes, just watch and enjoy!'. :sneaky:

Wow. Awards, eh? That's cool. Anyway, welcome! I am a mediocre writer, so, heh, be kind.

    What Won't You Write?

I bottled out of the Exorcist quite early on. 😅 granted I was only a kid. Fine, a teenager! 😛 but it's as disturbing as shit, in my defence. To answer the question. Romance. Won't touch it. If it isn't action or supernatural-themed, or doesn't explore a character's dark past, then I won't...

How to avoid tropes and cliches?

What tricks do you emplore to avoid tropes and cliches? Like putting a werewolf on a spaceship? or having vampires in a futuristic world of flying cars and laser guns? Or having zombies possess the ability to perform sonnets? (Okay, that last one was a joke ).

Plus when I first started using it my brain was generating like a hundred variations of tv show and movie crossover scenarios -...

The Generative-AI Risk: Making Us Less Human

I have used AI to produce stories for the sake of having something to read. And might use it to analyse my stories. But if I have an idea I want to do, then I do it myself.

I just see the image being doctored so that the guy's and the cat's heads the other way around. :ROFLMAO:

    What are you working on?

I am attempting to write a zombie story that is set in a city hit by a complete blackout - so mostly in darkness! And I'm trying to avoid 'showing' the zombies too much; just relying on sound, smell, and partial appearances (Like an arm thrashing through a gap in a barricade).

    What are you working on?

I know this is over a week old, but I would say open up different word files or get different sheets of paper, and do a page of each idea per day. You never know, you might land on one that you just want to keep writing! If you've already conquered this slump, which idea are you pursuing?
