This is the OOC Thread for the Chronicles of Elidel, a Cyberpunk-Fantasy text roleplay.

Roleplay Genre: Cyberpunk-Fantasy, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Slice-of-Life

Roleplay GM: Whiskii

Setting:
Elidel
, a walled megacity on the fictional planet of Akyros, a once Earth-like planet ravaged by both arcane and chemical pollution.

The city of Elidel has hundreds of levels, ascending high into Akyros's murky skies and extending deep into the depths of the planet's crust. With a landscape encompassing a messy amalgamation of various Human and Non-Human architectural styles built over millennia, the city is an almost-nauseating sight to behold.

Elidel sustains their population on a combination of galactic food imports and magically-shielded agriculture facilities outside the city's walls.

Only the city's elite live in luxury above the clouds, while the rest of society can only dream of such a life. The deeper you go into the city's bowels, the worse life becomes.

Recreational drugs and cybernetics are commonplace among the ordinary populace. But in a city so massive, it is impossible to record every single new drug or cybernetic enhancement on the street (and it's not like the ruling elite care very much).

Magic is both an uncontrollable force of nature, and a daily necessity. Magic is worked into much of the city's bloated infrastructure, with the most obvious example being Elidel's monstrous city-wide train system — reliant on massive teleportation portals powered by the screams of a thousand dying wind sprites to get trains through the city.

Basic Story Lore:
Elidel is not short on conflict. Whether it's petty street fights to full inter-species turf wars, death is often a part of life.

But this city is also full of stories. Where do your characters stand in this world? Will they choose to fight for a better life, or try to escape the confines of their wretched existence in more ways than one?

Or maybe they will try to escape the city altogether by taking a risk in the wasteland beyond the city's walls. Rumours are being whispered, about there being other smaller cities in the magic-torn wastes, far from the crushing realities of life in Elidel and rife with opportunity. But those who made a run for it never returned to tell the tale.

After all, why would they?

The plot is intended to be slice-of-life, and if the players choose, adventure-filled. It's open-ended and the setting has a lot of potential for many mundane adventures.

A note on Genre:
The Cyberpunk genre is defined by StudioBinder to usually contain:
  • A dystopian city setting where mega-corporations rule
  • Full integration of technology into society, featuring cybernetic implants
  • Outsider protagonists (punks) who often are very familiar with the technology around them
  • Hard boiled detective and film noir vibes and influence
  • Themes dabbling in trans-humanism, existentialism, and what it means to be human.
(From: Cyberpunk Explained — Origins, Characteristics and Themes)

There is an emphasis on this descriptive idea of "high tech, low life", advanced technology contrasted with the cruel reality of life in a turbulent dystopian future. Drugs, cybernetic enhancements and virtual realities abound, but it's all escapism from the pains of a harsh life.

But we have the addition of Fantasy elements to our story -- magic and fantasy races, which spices up our typical Cyberpunk setting. Fusing both of these genres has led to some interesting media in the past (like this roleplay's direct inspiration, a tabletop RPG called Shadowrun).

Roleplay Rules (Please Read These Before Proceeding!):

Follow all the general rules of Writingforum.org.

Respect and kind to one another. This is an important rule. We all have different levels of writing abilities and voices. We all have different levels of written Roleplay Experience.

The expected writing level of this forum and any roleplays within will be casual. Meaning, please check your spelling and grammar before posting, but ignore the thesaurus at will.

No AI generated/created writing allowed.

All roleplays will be written in English and in third-person, past tense. Unfortunately, although we have elves, no Sindarin is allowed.

This is a Cyberpunk-themed game. We may run into mature themes/topics. Please keep things T-rated, like you're writing for young adults. So, moderate violence and suggestiveness is fine. But nothing excessively graphic (like fully described sex scenes).

No un-readable, colorful, photo-ridden and fancy roleplay posts. Also, please keep all font sizes to at least 12 and automatic or black color. Feel free to use Bold, Underscore, and Italics.

No God-Modding, which means don’t make your character immune or invisible to any physical damage, above the laws of the roleplay world. If this rule is broken, I will kindly step in and ask the player to modify the character.

No Self-indulgent Tango, where your character is the most important, makes everything about them and continually takes over the story/attention away from other characters. It is fine to have scenes where your character has a spotlight on them. Enjoy those times, but try not to tango your way to the front of the stage when another character is having a moment in the sunshine.

You are encouraged to participate in worldbuilding and actively participate in the Lore thread. Of course, all worldbuilding discussion will take place in the OOC thread.

Each player is allowed a maximum of two characters.

A Note on Politics (This Is Very Important):
Keep real-life politics out, even if this game has the working class standing up to the oppressive elite. However, politics within the confines of this fictional world is encouraged (such as a Elf-supremacist group, or a Rights-for-Sprites movement).

In-world politics can draw inspiration from generic IRL political issues (Human Rights, Crime, Healthcare etc), but not blatant, ham-fisted references to real-world current day political issues. As this is a different world, there will be drastically different social issues, so players should write in-world politics that use possible lore-friendly issues their characters would face.

So, for example, it would be inappropriate if someone made up an Orc politician named Donaldus Trumpkhaz and made him specifically oppress dark skinned humans. But something like a "humans-first" political party would be fine.

All here!

Also I think we should establish some kind of magic system before we start. I'd love to have your input!

I'm thinking of creating a character who works for a greedy mega-corporation.

What should we call the corporation?

I'm thinking they will manufacture cybernetics.

Thoughts?

I'm thinking of a young, idealistic woman who gets a rude awakening with the way things are run
So she believes that her employers just want the best for people, until she finds out the ugly truth...

I think we can connect our characters this way, because I have a father-son duo who run a back alley clinic and they're always in need of cybernetics.

You might like to post an invitation to the membership to join this role play in the Role Play Update thread.

Include a two-sentence over-view and a link to this thread!

Oh and I'll be adding a slang list (among other things) to the Lore thread in the hopes that we can add onto it as we go along.
