"Cozy" fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, etc. - thoughts?

I don’t expect any particular book be completely replicated in other media, but I do expect the characters to be at least mostly replicated. Imagine Sherlock Holmes be shown as an idiot and Inspector Lestrade solve the crime. That’s how I felt about the characters in the tv show.

Well, that sucks. You'd think the producers would at least read the books. Does Anne write the series scripts?

I have a vague recollection of a version where Watson was the clever one, but he let Holmes take the credit. That inversion amused me.

But you are correct, all too often they take a single core concept or character and rewrite the plot/world how they feel it should be, disregarding the message of the original author.

Now you know how I felt about The Watch BBC TV show (apparently inspired by Terry Pratchett's Discworld, but they completely ignored his characters and made up their own stuff). Complete and utter pile of poo.

If you're going to take someone else's characters and butcher them like that, don't bother. F*** the BBC. 🖕

It's a shame. The BBC used to be good. I'm sure that sometimes it still is. I wonder what happened.

No, she’s one of many Executive Producers which include George R R Martin and Robert Redford. She did sign off on the project.

On IMDB, most who rate it highly have never read the books. Those who did read the books downgrade the show for the same reasons as I did.

That was a good comedy - Without a Clue - starring Ben Kingsley as Watson and Michael Caine as Holmes. Very entertaining.

Interesting. Having read and thoroughly appreciated the books, I'll avoid seeking out the series for a weekend binge.

Not a bad concept for a genre. Not sure I've read anything like that. Doesn't appeal to me as much since I'm more the swashbuckling adventure type but I can see the value there. I might just try writing one at some point, just for fun.

I don't read or watch dark stuff as it triggers my anxiety and my mental health is far more important. I have read cosy mysteries. But mot often. Last I read was months ago, cant recall the title but it was a murder mystery. Body was found in the mc's bakery with a knife in the back. No blood or other stuff, little malice etc. Even to me cosy books are not exciting enough to love the genre.

Pie in the Sky wasn't written fiction, but it was pretty cozy. I enjoyed it.

Speaking of cozy and dark stuff, my current critique partner told me recently that my writing is "cozy" because my protagonist and her guide keep bickering and bantering with each other. *shrug* But inter-character banter establishes relationships, right?

Yes, I enjoy writing characters who bicker. If they agreed all the time, it would be boring. ;) But maybe I ought to ease off a tad, if it means that the story isn't moving forward because the guide keep cracking jokes at the protagonist's expense or winding her up.

Too bad, but oh well. I'm off to Kill My Darlings. *picks up his trusty Axe of Gag Deletion* ;)
