Using 'Woman' as an adjective, not a noun?
Using 'Woman' as an adjective, not a noun?
you mean like instead of saying "female scientist" they say "woman scientist" ?
Yes. Exactly. Female is grammatically correct.you mean like instead of saying "female scientist" they say "woman scientist" ?
fair. But why is male the default? Why isn’t Chris Evans a good actress? Why do we assume the male default is gender neutral? Just curious.Any takers for "scientistess?"
Denominating gender in activities has always bothered me. An actor is a person who acts. A murderer someone who murders. Robber, farmer, gardener, roofer, police officer, and on and on, refer to activities. That's all. Gender has no bearing on those activities and I don't understand why it should be specified.
A murderer someone who murders
Really? I see it way too much in news articles.Never seen that.
Weird.Apparently, they're now all homiciders.
fair. But why is male the default? Why isn’t Chris Evans a good actress? Why do we assume the male default is gender neutral? Just curious.
I get that. But the grammar bothers me. I don't think female should be a bad word. The problem is that “ female” has become a loaded term thanks to the tater tots. You know the ones that say stuff like “ feminism has ruined females” ( where incidentally the grammatically correct term is women)
Thanks to the toxic usage it has become difficult for those who are not of that ilk to use the term… I remember saying female members once while arguing with the chicken clique and them all jumping up and down about how sexist it was and women members was preferable
Weird.
It’s because etymology wise the dominant root is used as the male one hence actor could be non gender specific since it means someone who acts whereas an actress specifically means a woman who actsfair. But why is male the default? Why isn’t Chris Evans a good actress? Why do we assume the male default is gender neutral? Just curious.
Or OJ Simpson an acquitted murderess??
I don't think actor specifies gender. The activity is to act. The person doing it is the actor. Rather than seeing the male as default, I'd suggest it's a latter day acknowledgement that women exist in speres traditionally owned by men. Male nurses? Maybe it works the other eway round too. As long as they can stop the bleeding, I don't care.fair. But why is male the default? Why isn’t Chris Evans a good actress? Why do we assume the male default is gender neutral? Just curious.
the chicken clique
And authors call themselves authors.I think nowadays most female actors refer to themselves as just that - "I am an actor."
