Well, I can certainly speak to that. When I was a child, one of my teeth was damaged to the point where it had to be removed completely, root and all, and replaced with an artificial tooth on a post. This was done without anesthetic, because (as the dentist explained) he couldn't know whether he'd gotten it all until it stopped hurting. I cried and cried, of course. This was done around 1960, as I can best recall. Dentistry has come a long way in the intervening years.
