Ideas about a world where you need to give up memories in exchange for skills.

Is that the China Mieville one with the aliens who get high off of language and their dialogue is written like fractions? That book is freaking nuts. Chine Mieville is freaking nuts.
Yep, freaking pecan nuts. I read it because Wrey mentioned it once or twice. After reading that and Perdido Street Station, I later learned his genre was partially "New Weird" and I thought, well, carry on then; story checks out.

The City and the City is probably my favorite. That concept is off the wall.

You were around for Wrey? Were you under the Stuart name? My mind is a sieve.

for research purposes

Research into what?

the government would gain the most by allowing this technology

oh, adding the government into the mix is an interesting complication

those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it, and I think that fits perfectly here. It's very easy to control a population

Okay, now you are on to something here. Would the new powers granted interfere in controlling the population?

I got a question, do they take minor memories (like a birthday party, or something like the smell of a rose) or major memories? xD I did see a 1980's twilight zone episode similar to that premise, let me look it up first!

This type of technology needs to be constantly monitored for several reasons to make sure everything is working properly. I believe that when there is a use that differs from the others or attracts attention in some way, they record it to check what happened and make sure everything is correct. It would be very dangerous if someone ended up developing some kind of immunity, so keeping everything under control is essential.

Regarding the powers interfering, I personally don't think so. The main form of control is memory loss, not the power itself.

Yes, they take any kind of memory! As I said before, as long as all those memories add up to a day, they're all valid.
I watched a lot of The Twilight Zone from the 60s, and if I strain my memory a bit, I remember a similar episode, but involving time? Or maybe I'm going crazy, lmao.
