Two things ( in regard of the old forum writing forums, not this one)

One there’s a high chance of the board going down on the 28th

Two we’re seeing a butt load of spammers since the spam filter failed. Im going to turn registration back off but since so many already got through the wire in 24hrs from now im going to remove the old workshop and contests from view ( they’ll still be there but you won’t be able to see them which wil stop the bots from scraping content)

Can I get permission to delete my 1 workshop piece? Or can you delete it, please?

I can but I can’t hard delete over there so it will still be in the database. The only way I can delete permanently is to delete the whole forum board… even then it would still be in the backup at the server

On this side of the wire homer and I have hard delete powers but Daniel would never give them to us over that side

Probably the best option is for you to edit and replace it with garbage. But even then it’ll still be in the back ups ( I think we can forget the rules about not doing that over there)

This applies to everyone else as well if you want to delete or edit out your work from the old site do so ( I’ll see what I can give you in the way of delete powers) I’ll also need to turn the posting back on, it’s off inthe workshop at the moment to stop the tide of porn spam

The only rules im still enforcing over there are don’t post spam, no illegal shit, and don’t be a dick to others…all the other stuff I care as much as Daniel seems to care about his forum

For anyone that isn't sure how to back up, you can use Chrome or Firefox's built-in print function to save thread pages into PDFs. They will look just like the forum and have text that can be copied. You have to do it page by page unfortunately, but that's the best there is I believe.

Go and save your favourite threads while you still can. I'm going to save my blog entries and my contest winner threads.

I went over there and I can't edit the first post. Is it possible you could just hide it? : https://www.writingforums.org/threads/contest-entry-promise-of-a-ghost-a-retelling-of-‘a-christmas-carol’-1697-words.178014/

Or just replace content in the first post for me? Thanks.
you can now i've just turned posting back on, also members and up should be able to delete threads ... i can't give you hard delete (well i can but it doesnt do anything danny boy has the hard delete turned off in a place i cant access)

What is the risk in leaving your stories in the Workshop?

not much once ive hgiddenit from view so the spam bots can't scrape it - except we don't know what daniel or the host if daniel doesnt pay might do with the database... its theoretically possible it could get sold and scraped or whatever... not a big possiblity but its there

fine by me - but everyone has different levels of worry on these things... if i have to oversee the last days of rome i'm going to do it like wrey wouldve and give everyone as much choice and as much protection as i can

okay so alaric the goth is at the gates (in the formof several million spam bots)and honorious doesnt give a shit because hes off in ravenna didling his chickens, but it my personal principle that I do it right or i don't do it at all

wll i could but i'd have to do it manually so i'm not going to.... at that point you may as well delete your account anyway because you won't be able to log into it anyway

I deleted everything of mine from the workshop. Looks like it worked. Tried searching for them after and nothing came up. I don't know how far back the backups go so there's at least one short story of mine in the short story contest that's too far back to show up now. Hopefully that means it's gone gone?

Also @big soft moose I really liked your rendition of Danny Boy

likewise if anyone wants their account at the old place deleted let me know... it doesm't remove your posts but does take out your email address etc
Yeah if you can delete my account that would be cool. I can't remove my date of birth, but deleting my email would be nice. I just changed my password and deleted all my threads so I think I am all set to leave the past behind.

Trying to decide what's worth hunting down and saving. I just got my blog, rescued the crits on my WIP from a now-missing writing partner. Do I bother digging into the Workshop? Probably not, most of it's long been forgotten.

Sigh
