Rejection, rejection, rejection...

Got a few more this week. 162-day form rejection for a Three Ravens fantasy anthology. 50-day form from The Cosmic background, and a quick 1-day form from The Dark. We're up to 87 for the year.

I've got a few no responses to tap out on, but I'll save 'em for later and maybe use 'em to pad my stats later 😅

Unforch it seems like more and more mags and anthologies are embracing the, "if you don't hear from us after X, that's a rejection" model. I don't like that. How hard can it be to send a mass form rejection email?

Really not a fan of the "if you don't hear form us after this period of time" and it annoys me.

Right? Plus, even aside from the lack of courtesy, it opens up a whole new world of opportunities for technical issues or other mistakes.

I’ve mentioned this before, but when I submitted to Fantastic Detectives back in 2021, their email system experienced a serious glitch when they relocated it to a new address. Instead of forwarding submissions to the new email, the old one started randomly chucking them into the junk folder…but it was still sending out confirmation emails. So me and about a dozen others thought our subs were under consideration when in fact nobody ever laid eyes on them.

The glitch wasn’t discovered until months later, when the editors announced they’d sent out responses to all the submissions and we all went “Wait, what about us?” Fortunately, the editor-in-chief was very gracious and asked us to resubmit. “The Skull in the Tree” received an acceptance, but it never would’ve seen the light of day if they used the no-response rejection model.

A call for subs that may be of interest to those of us who frequent this thread: Metaphorosis is looking for SFF short stories (rejected at least twenty times) and novelettes (rejected at least ten) for their anthology Trunk: Stories that Took the Long Way. Stories can be original or reprints.

I’ll probably send in a novelette for this one.

Huh, I don't have anything with that many rejections yet.

Thank you for this. I just sent off one of my stories that I have come close with a few times, but remains unsold after 25 rejections !

I wasn’t sure whether I did at first. Took about an hour of combing through old emails and the Submission Grinder to confirm I had one novelette with exactly ten rejections before it found a home in 2020.

I’m pretty sure it’s the only thing of mine that qualifies. It’s funny: when you’re sending stuff out and getting barraged with rejections, it can feel like a lot more than it is.

Got a couple more this week. I need to do some more submissions soon but I am really preoccupied - just three weeks til the self-pub novel launch.

101-day form rejection from the new magazine Tableware. The editor said that he received some 2000 stories and selected 10 😅 Gotta love those odds, right?
Also received a quick 4-day rejection from that Trunk anthology mentioned above. Up to 89 for the year now.
