Relaxing adventure or cozy fantasy novels

I try writing these but they often end up being shorter than desired or more like short stories because they dont have all of the elements of a traditional novel plot

Have you read books similar to what you want to write? Read them and deconstruct them. Identify what the authors did and how the stories are structured, and then write your own.

You're going to need to be lot more specific than that. What is "relaxing fantasy" and "cosy adventure", to you?

Well I am interested in writing a novel that doesn't have the typical plot structure:
Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution

Rather than these components, I would like to learn how to write my own unique kind of plot structure

I have had success with short stories and custom plot structure
However not novels, I feel that the traditional length of a novel is longer and either needs structure or something else

OK, but you were specifically asking about "relaxing adventure" and "cosy fantasy", and I'm still unsure what these are, or how they would be related to the above.

I'm confused. Are you saying cozy fantasy and relaxing adventure don't have all the elements of a traditional plot, or that what you write doesn't? Based on your most recent response I think you mean you don't write them that way?

I'm not familiar with relaxing adventure, but cozy fantasy definitely does still usually have a normal structure, so what is it you're envisioning?

I guess I mean novels with other plot structures.
Structures that are not the same as many mainstream novels.

If you aren't using a typical structure, can you give us an idea of what structure you do plan to have?

Thats what im curious about.
Seems as if there should be other plot structures although im not sure how difficult creating a unique one would be.

Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution
They all fall into that for the most part. Kind of like how water can only have a hydrogen/oxygen structure. There's maybe a little deviation, but if you stray to far, it's no longer a story.

If your goal is for it to be an actual story, it's going to need to follow some sort of event structure. Otherwise it's just an essay or an exposition or something.

can I ask you why?

Rather than say "I don't want that structure", ask yourself what each element of that structure actually does, and then think about whether and why you need it. You don't want your plot to have a climax or a resolution? OK, but why? What are going to do instead?

I’m sure we’ve had this discussion on the old forum, all stories pretty much have a beginning middle and end, but there are numerous that don’t follow the structure you’ve laid out above… it’s generally not a great idea to start with exposition for example

I actually heard about "Kishōtenketsu" (spelling taken from Wikipedia) recently, which is what Studio Ghibli uses. According to the video that I was watching when I heard of it, stories using that narrative structure are supposed to result in characters that feel more real.
