INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

When I was laid up after an auto accident, my high school chemistry teacher sent me a get-well card with this poem typed out in full. He knew I was in for a rough patch of recovery, and gave me these words of encouragement.
 

Lady Lazarus​

Dying
Is an art, like everything else.
I do it exceptionally well.

Comeback in broad day

Death of the Ball Turret Gunner

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State
And I hunched in the belly till my wet fur froze
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I awoke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of turret with a hose.

Just to be clear, the ball turret was a plexiglass ball holding a machine gun in the bottom of some American bomber planes during WW 2, operated by a man in the turret. The attacking fighter planes shot with explosive shells. Always strikes me as powerful summary of the lethal violence of war contrasted with the mundane cleaning up of its aftermath.

Eldorado​

On Learning to Dissect Fetal Pigs

i’ve donated bibles to thrift stores

(mashed them in plastic trash bags with an acidic himalayan salt lamp—

the post-baptism bibles, the ones plucked from street corners from the meaty hands of zealots, the dumbed-down, easy-to-read, parasitic kind):



remember more the slick rubber smell of high gloss biology textbook pictures; they burned the hairs inside my nostrils,

& salt & ink that rubbed off on my palms.

under clippings of the moon at two forty five AM I study&repeat

ribosome

endoplasmic—

lactic acid

stamen



at the IHOP on the corner of powers and stetson hills—



i repeated & scribbled until it picked its way & stagnated somewhere i can’t point to anymore, maybe my gut—

maybe there in-between my pancreas & large intestine is the piddly brook of my soul.



it’s the ruler by which i reduce all things now; hard-edged & splintering from knowledge that used to sit, a cloth against fevered forehead.

can i let them both be? this fickle faith and this college science that heckles from the back of the classroom





now i can’t believe—

that the bible and qur’an and bhagavad gita are sliding long hairs behind my ear like mom used to & exhaling from their mouths “make room for wonder”

all my understanding dribbles down the chin onto the chest & is summarized as:

life is merely

to ovum and sperm

and where those two meet

and how often and how well

and what dies there.

The Charge of the Light Brigade​

(Personal note: Much as I detest Tennyson's sentimentality, this poem reminds me of the idiotic, bumbling blunderers that led to the tragedy that was the Charge of the Light Brigade, and the system of purchasing your own military commission -- an utter stupidity that put upper-class idiots in charge.

Thank god we no longer have that system in the military. Only in politics. Oh, wait. :(

On a happier note, this reminds me of a joke I read once. ;) When homes in the American West were first being connected to the electrical grid, the fledgling electricity companies sent out salesmen to address the crowds who were concerned about safety and high prices, etc.

One such salesman chose to address his crowd in the style of the old revival meetings, and ended his speech with "If I may quote Tennyson, honour the light brigade!"

One man immediately jumped to his feet and hollered: "Oh, what a charge they made.") :)
