Suggestions and ideas

I checked around setting and couldn't find a place to write in profile information, like a "hi, I'm so and so and I write this stuff.". Is that something that's not going to be a feature or is it a box that has not been checked?

Also, where can I change my 'New Member' description? Or is that not something I can do for 14 days?

Can we have a "Research" channel?
I really liked browsing through those for information and for taking on new research challenges

Right now, the forum is being kept to the basics and the research forum is part of the Writing Craft section, I believe. I heard that later on, the mods might organize all of it. But for now I have heard that keeping things simple and slowly expanding is the plan.

I probably will do that shortly - lux is right that we don't want too many to start but research is kinda different from the plot/setting/character etc questions

that's under personal details in your profile

Speaking of contests, what are your thoughts on a once or twice yearly 50K Novel writing contest? I know we discussed it a bit on the old forum. But wanted to see what you thought. My ideas still stand, mostly. I think doing twice a year would make it special and I would love to facilitate it.

Who would do the reading / judging? Seems like a lot to ask of anyone.
I don't think it's a 'judged' contest. The way to win is to just finish! So, those who write 50K win and I was thinking they could be allowed to post the first chapter in a separate forum as a showcase. I wrote about it on the other forum. I would repost it here, but it's a very long post and Moose already knows what I'm talking about. (I assume?)

But yeah, it's not a content winning contest. It's a marathon kind of winning where crossing the finish line is the goal.

It's a good idea in theory, but I'm not sure what the level of interest would be. We'll have a lot more information in the coming months. Participation in the Contests, Roleplay, and Workshop should give us a general idea of overall interest in things that are similar. And what our membership levels are going to be like. You probably need a pool of least 100 active members to execute all of those things. And to get an active pool of 100 you probably need closer to a 1000 total.

I'm not saying any of that isn't doable, but we have to see where we're at first. And it's the kind of things were everyone is going to say, this is awesome, I can't wait to it. Then nada.

That would be my concern, if we're actually talking about reading a bunch of novels and voting or whatnot. Even judging contests is a massive commitment.

Isn't that essentially just running our own NaNoWriMo?

Yeah, no one is reading 100 novels. I suppose I phrased it wrong. It's not a contest, but a challenge. If you write 50K in a month, you win. That's about it. Maybe there would be a separate showcase forum where you could post your first chapter as a reward. It's a replacement for NaNoWriMo.

Yep! But since that place died, I was kind of wondering if we could do something here, instead. Also, we could modify it to make it more unique to us. I suggested in my old post we could have genre challenges, where a genre is assigned so writers could get out of their comfort zones and try something new.

On the other hand, I like the idea of an annual "best of" competition. I don't imagine we'll get full enough of ourselves to view it as some kind of literary award. This is all for fun, to build the community, and sets a goal for members to aim for and practise their skills.

We already do that in the writing competitions. Asking someone to write a novel in a genre they're unfamiliar with would be a much larger and more complex challenge, and not one I'm convinced enough people will take part in.

We need to be realistic about what we might want to see and what's realistic and will gain enough interest. At the current state this forum is in, going too far would just be a waste of effort that could be better directed elsewhere.
