Hey! I stumbled onto these forums while browsing old Reddit posts looking for a place to find a writing community. Writing is such a solitary activity and I know no one near me who writes, and I’m dying to talk to someone about it!

It’s fun joining this “new” forum. Even though a lot of you already know each other, all the threads look new so it’s not as intimidating to just jump in somewhere. I’m looking forward to exploring this little realm of writing :) I write sci-fi and creative nonfiction.

The previous WF had so many subforums that most of the topics I probably never read, and most people around here seem new to me or I to them considering I had 70 and sth posts in total since I first registered there 4, 5 years ago. This place seems more friendly and has the vibe of a smaller community (even though most posters don't seem to be fully anonymous), I get a bit anxious when I realize WF is one of the first place to go to for anyone looking for a writing community.

To your last point, if it’s any consolation - among all the posts I looked through about writing communities, this forum was only mentioned once. It didn’t seem like the first place people mentioned.

I read the last one was overrun with bots. What kind of problems did they cause?

It's probably good for WF if it gets mentioned from time to time, despite my anxieties. I don't know about the bots, guess it was one of the reactions to the forum getting shut down, I read the info and very quickly registered here, there was probably a lot more going on that I don't know about.

Hello and welcome!

Basically it was porn spam, but there was also a concern about them scraping content which was why we turned off the board before we left

A larger problem at the original forum though was that the owner had basically disappeared and kept not paying the server fee, plus it was running on XF1 which hasn’t been updated since 2016

Hence the decision by the staff team to migrate the community over here before the old one fails completely

Oh, that's nasty. I guess the updated security here will be a boon.

Welcome, Tallyfire, nice username.
Hah, thanks! I saw the thread where people explained their usernames and wondered if I should add to it… but this name is literally just a word I liked the sound of and “Tally” is a nice nickname. No meaning at all. I figured I better have a fiery avatar to go with it so here we are.

I quite like your name “Starryteller.” It has weight.
