Why do you, or don't you, take part in writing contests?

May your triumphs be glorious and your failures abject.

That's my mantra for writing. I could send it on a t-shirt to anyone interested enough to send me their size, though there's a massively superior chance that I won't.

I tried a couple of contests but my writing was so poor I came last.

That's happened to me a few times. Doesn't necessarily mean the writing was poor, though !
