ASHEN MARCHES – Character Index

Name: Garrun Vale
Age: 41
Role in the March (Guard, Scholar, Scout, Engineer, Civilian, etc.): Guard – Vanguard Captain

Physical Description:
Tall and broad-shouldered, Garrun moves with deliberate control. His dark hair is cut short but threaded with early gray. A long scar cuts from his temple to his jaw. His armor is salvaged and uneven, reinforced in places with hammered iron plates. He carries a weathered longsword across his back and keeps his gauntlets on almost constantly.

Backstory:
Garrun once served as a garrison commander in the capital city of Knuckle before the Day of Reasoning, when the Hollow Sovereign purged the city of life. He survived, though he rarely speaks of the details. After the collapse of organized resistance and the rise of the World-Poisons, Garrun joined a caravan of survivors that would later become the March. Over time, his discipline and tactical awareness placed him at the front lines of its outer defenses.

Personality:
Measured, observant and guarded. Garrun speaks only when necessary and believes survival depends on restraint rather than heroics. He struggles to understand optimism but protects it fiercely in others.

Strengths:
• Experienced battlefield tactician
• Strong physical endurance
• Calm under pressure
• Deep loyalty to the March

Flaws:
• Carries unresolved guilt from Knuckle
• Slow to trust newcomers
• Overprotective of civilians
• Emotionally distant

Other Information:
He keeps a fragment of blackened stone from Knuckle in a pouch at his belt. He claims it reminds him what happens when walls fail.

Name: Brody Heulwen

Age: 20

Role in the March (Guard, Scholar, Scout, Engineer, Civilian, etc.): Civilian

Physical Description:

Brody is an attractive young man, about six-feet-tall, with a muscular build, a boyish face, and grey eyes that are always observing. His sandy-brown hair is tied back with a leather cord, and he dresses in simple linen trousers and tunic. His movements are slow and considered, as if always questioning himself.

Backstory:

Brody’s led a sheltered life, living with his large family (he is the middle of seven children), and working hard on a wheat and barley farm, on the outskirts of the neutral village of Afal. His father, Ganar, is a stern authoritarian. His mother, Finna, taught him to read, and encourages him to poetry, hoping for him to have a better life than that on the farm.

Personality:

Somewhat of a dreamer, Brody blends into the background, between his older and younger siblings. He doesn’t make waves, or take risks, but does what he is told, under the stern authority of his father. Secretly, he is his mother’s favourite. Not only is Finna drawn to his gentle and pure spirit, she’s protective of him, since he’s been the most abused by Ganar. But Brody will never let his mother see him cry.

Strengths:

Loyal and trustworthy
Peacemaker
Generous

Flaws:
Doesn’t stick up for himself
Naïve and idealistic

Other Information:

In the future, Brody will leave the farm and join the March.

Name: Aderyn Cyflym

Age: 18

Role in the March (Guard, Scholar, Scout, Engineer, Civilian, etc.): Scout

Physical Description:

Aderyn is a young woman with a perpetual scowl and a hot glare that could cut a man in two. About five-foot-four, she dresses as a man, in leather trousers and tunic, and takes little care with her appearance. Under the grime and matted, dark hair, she might be attractive, but she will never let anyone see enough of her to make the determination.

Backstory:

Aderyn was orphaned at a young age, and has always looked out for herself. On her own, she joined the March at the age of ten, and killed her first man at the age of twelve. Everything she has ever accomplished, she has fought for, including gaining the position of Scout with the March. Her sheer audacity endears her to the March’s leadership.

Personality:

Aderyn exists on the defensive, ready to fight anyone who she imagines poses even the smallest threat. If she is mocked, she will bring the point of her pearl-handled dagger she keeps in a sheath at her waist to the mocker’s throat. She has a very low opinion of people, and keeps them at a distance. She takes things very seriously, and rarely laughs.

Strengths:

Brave and Courageous
Gets things done
Forthright

Flaws:

Jumps to conclusions
No sense of humour
Does not work well with others

Other Information:

When sent on a scouting mission, Aderyn insists on going alone.
