I'm not planning to go anywhere. Got a few hundred words in first thing this morning and need to add to that before I take a nap which I need before I do anything else.

This has been a weird cold virus. Feel like heck one day, feel good for a day or two, then wake up to cold symptoms again. I am beginning to feel taunted as well as persecuted.
Change in the weather maybe? I get weird allergies, psuedo-sickness when the weather gets caught between seasons every year.

My daughter called. Some stupid little tiny lady who couldn’t see over the steering wheel came off 101 at full freeway speed and broadsided her Suburu on the driver’s side as she was sitting at a stop sign. Knocked her and her pregnant tummy sideways into the console. She says her side hurts, along with her back. Knocked my granddaughter's car sear wonky. Scared holy hell out of the au pair. Air bags went off and everyone seems to be mostly okay. Daughter said she heard Baby’s heartbeat and she’s felt her kick, but the ER refuses to monitor Baby because Rosie is 21 weeks and 1 day along and babies aren’t considered “viable” until 22 weeks. I fucking hate bureaucracy. When I called my daughter in law who is a nurse and was an ER tech for a decade, she said to tell daughter to go up to Labor and Delivery after she’s done with ER and she can get monitored there. Well, at least she could get monitored here in Wyoming. Washington’s medical laws are so blithering idiotic that who knows whether they will or not.

Daughter says the car, which is within a few months of being paid off, is totaled. No idea if the little idiot who hit them has insurance or not. No idea if little idiot was hurt and I really don’t care. She said she “couldn’t tell where the road went.” One really ought to be able to see over the dashboard before one can get a drivers license. And if you can’t tell where the damn road is, maybe you should slow the hell down until you can.

I’m grateful to still have a daughter and granddaughter.

Now that episode contains so many of our worst fears. I can say it out loud now because my daughter's about 17 weeks along with our first grandchild due in April and it's there in the back of my head every time she goes out on the road. Hopefully, the early signs that things are ok remain that way, and any accident that people can walk away from is a good one.

I'm not married and don't have kids, but -- holy ...!

Yes, healthcare bureaucracy stinks. There's nothing I can say to make this any better, but I'm wishing you, your daughter and your granddaughter all the best, Catriona. 🫂 Besides everything, your daughter was probably in shock and needed all the help she could get, which she didn't get in ER.

If the little granny has insurance, they will replace your daughter's car. If not ... I really don't know what to say. Over here in Victoria (Australia), CTP (Compulsory Third Party) insurance is mandatory for anyone who wants to legally register and drive a car. This covers injuries or death to other people in a car accident, but not property damage to vehicles or other property. So I searched for and found some extra car insurance I could live with, always paid for it, and never regretted it.

One really ought to be able to see over the dashboard before one can get a drivers license. And if you can’t tell where the damn road is, maybe you should slow the hell down until you can.

Agreed 100%. If you can't see the road ... DON'T DRIVE. That granny's lucky she didn't kill anybody. Sounds like she came damn close.

I hope everyone makes a full recovery very soon. 🫂

Sounds trite to say it, but it could have been so much worse.

That is so cool.

Another key discovery was that the spiders living in the cave are genetically distinct from the same species living just outside. This suggests they are becoming isolated as they adapt to the cave's unique environment. Ultimately, the team concluded that the combination of this genetic isolation and their food source is the primary reason these typically solitary spiders have developed colonial behavior.

Speciation fascinates me. Spiders fascinate me. Caving fascinates me. My husband was a professional cave ranger for the BLM for a couple of seasons. When I read him part of the article, he said, "I didn't know they did that." I said, "Spiders or cavers?" He said, "Spiders. Nothing a caver does would surprise me."

PS Torpedoing driver wasn't a granny- just tiny.

Congratulations, Rigor! Grandchildren are so fine. Sometimes I think I should've had them first.

Thank you. My wife and I are very much looking forward to it. Almost as importantly, our daughter and her partner are delighted too.

Do let us know when the definitive thumbs up arrives for your daughter.

Only have to wait five minutes in Wyoming. 🌧️❄️⚡💥

Baby is due right around the spring equinox.

Newsflash: I managed to get the winter clothes out of the basement and the summer clothing put away. When I went to the Saturday morning writers group today, I actually had weather appropriate clothing to wear.

I like this writers group. Emphasis is on writing for adults, religious writing is rare to non-existent, and people talk about a wide range of writing-related topics. One brilliant young man in the group taught me a lot about sci-fi and fantasy today. A talk about a program called Canva was rescheduled, thank goodness. My attendance at tech programs is accidental or for politeness's sake. Vord and I vant to be left alone.

Oh man, what a nightmare, Catriona. That must have been terrifying. Sounds like everything's going to be okay, though 🙏

The spider megalopolis is fascinating. It's kind of like when humans began living in larger and larger cities once farming and animal domestication became possible.

Regarding Canva, in an odd coincidence I learned how to use some of its features today, thanks to some guidance from our own J.T. I still have a lot to learn, but at least now the main page of my website looks like it was designed recently and not more than a decade ago. I'm going to work on creating some animated ads next for the upcoming book sale.

I was out on a Saturday night for the first time in a long time and now have a second wind even though it is past my bed-time!
