Oh, I forgot I was also active on Quora for a while, but it got way too stupid.

Snow on the ground, temps below zero last night- looks like winter has finally arrived.
Here in California, the weather's a little different... seldom that cold, but storms that knock down fences and trees. Here's something posted just now on NextDoor:

"Did anyone find my shed? You can't miss it. It's 10 feet by 10 feet..."

On the subject of internet nostalgia, the first thing that really hooked me was Google Steetview, at which I spent untold hours virtually driving through all the places I'd lived in over the years, and seeing how they have changed.

Oh, and became apparent to me that any respectable business had to have a web site, so I taught myself HTML (not so different from the old CP/M WordStar, actually.... and that's really getting nostalgic), and had a web site running, complete with pictures, in a couple of weeks. I guess that counts as internet nostalgia.

Late 90s internet for me as a teenager was pretty fun. We lived in the bush, so dial up was all we could get. It wasn't uncommon for my Ultima Online character to get murdered by mean people using T1s, but I managed well enough.

I remember trying to play Diablo II by dial-up. And yes, dying again, and again ... and again. Sigh. ;)

And then of course there was ICQ to chat with your friends before text messaging was a thing, and mIRC for your early social media chat.

And who can forget the Napster days? Downloading MP3s that sometimes took an hour for a single song, then burning them to a CD.

Yes, I remember using ICQ and IRC and all the rest of that sidechatty. I also remember Napster ... and Kazaa (which I dropped like a hot potato).

Yeah, those were fun times. But after a few years of seeing just how shitty people can behave online, I checked out of the social stuff. Haven't played an online game since.

Agreed. Guess I'm lucky that most of my online forums have been good that way (including this one!) 🫂 I moderated a few forums and battled my share of trolls, though.

Didn't use MySpace or The Book of Faces, didn't even get a cell phone til late 2014.

My only tussle with The Book of Faces was trying to log in. It let me create an account, but then refused to let me log in (!!!). Obviously I said a few not-very-nice words about that oh-so-lovely Mr. Zuckerberg, but I never actually used FB ... and from what I've heard of it, I haven't missed much.

BTW, this was years and years before the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and even longer before FB became Meta.

I can't say I remember CP/M, but I remember using MicroPro WordStar back in the DOS days. Does that count? =)

And yes, I taught myself HTML too (as well as XHTML, CSS and JavaScript). Eventually Dreamweaver came along and made things slightly easier.

"Did anyone find my shed? You can't miss it. It's 10 feet by 10 feet..."

🤣

I once watched a small above-ground pool sail over a friend's bi-level house to land on the highway beyond her back fence. I'd gone over to help her move her canoe into the garage. The wind picked up her end of the canoe along with her and put them down about two feet away from where they started. Fortunately, I had enough ballast for both of us so we didn't end up in a heap on the highway with the pool.

Clicked so I gotta post something..

We're under an "orange" warning (scale is yeller to red) for freezing rain overnight and into the morning. Ottawa's just a place where this happens fairly frequently. I've experienced some thicc ice accumulation over the years here. Usually results in widespread power outages :/

Windy and blustery here! So windy it blew the cover off of my barbecue. So far, it's rain. Hope it doesn't change to ice.

Chilly with blue skies since Christmas Eve. Beautiful days.

Son arrived home Christmas Eve. Great to see him, he's in great form, yada yada. But...

As soon as he arrived, the three dogs immediately got all giddy and fawning over him, following him around for any morsel of attention. Not one of them looked even the least bit embarassed when I reminded them who's been feeding and watering and cleaning up after them all year. Son stayed at a friend's last night and the dogs tried to act like nothing had changed and I was still their demi-god. Tramps, the whole lot of them. Nothing but tramps.

Snow on the ground. Sun in the sky. 25 degrees and about 15 mph wind. A perfectly reasonable day, as far as December goes.
I remember so many of those days. Today it's downright cold here, temp in high 50s, to mid 60s, sunny with 23 MPH wind. Might have to put on a long sleeve shirt with my shorts.:) My southern cat doesn't want to stay outside long. I'm the doorman ya know!

Baby, it's cold outside, but there's green chili on the kitchen stove, a fire in the woodstove, a dog on my feet, and my husband across the room with a dog on his lap. Life is good tonight.

It's funny, but I just watched a MASH episode called "Baby, It's Cold Outside" ... about winter in a MASH unit in Korea. ;)

And it reminded me of this non sequitur from another MASH episode. The doctors and nurses are trying to clean the operating theatre, and start bickering. Colonel Potter steps in to calm things down:

Potter: All right, can we just get along?
BJ: (sings) Git along, little doggie.
Hawkeye: I once had a long little doggie. A daschund.
BJ: Ah, a hot dog. What happened to him?
Hawkeye: Got mustered out.
BJ: I relish these conversations.
Maj. Houlihan: Will you two goofballs get to work?!

It's silly, but I liked it. :)

Over here, it's sun in the sky and 30 degrees (sorry, that's about 85 F), no wind, and 50% humidity. Phew. A perfectly reasonable December day for us.

And of course I had to go for a walk earlier this morning. Got exhausted and sweaty, but that's OK.

That's what dogs do. ;) As soon as someone new walks in the door: "OMG YOU'RE BACK! WE MISSED YOU SO MUCH!! NEVERLEAVEAGAIN NEVERLEAVEAGAIN NEVERLEAVEAGAIN NEVERLEAVEAGAIN!!!"

And you're like "Jeez, calm down, will ya?! I just came back to get my hat!"

We got lucky with the freezing rain. There was a bit, but it could've been a lot worse. Randomly sold another paperback today, which is nice. This evening it's just hanging out with the cat, and watching the hockey.

I'm hanging out with the cat right now, and if she'd settle down into a nice purring ball of fur somewhere other than on top of my boobs, I'd be a lot happier about it. Ah, There. Yes. That's nice. Sit between me and the chair arm. Very cozy.

I haven't written a word since before Ireland. I can't seem to get back into my old routine. Maybe some of it is because there is so much going on over the Christmas holidays. I am going to put my nose to the grindstone come January!

That's my goal, too. Get my shit together in January. Get some serious word count into a Sex Robot sequel and take advantage of the spare time from the ole unemployment !

I'm debating between two novel ideas for when I get done with work. Both are solid. One is easier but probably limited while the other is much harder but has some serious home run potential if I don't screw it up. Should probably do the easier guy first to knock some rust off.

I just finished doing my part of advertising the preorder special from B&N: three FB pages, a pile of emails, a post on another thread. Just looked at the clock: almost 2:00 a.m. So much for my reasonable bedtime hour. I have company coming in eight hours. Well, she knows the worst about me (I am not an enthusiastic hausfrau) and won't mind the piles of books and papers.

Not really. Internet access in the early 2000s was still by dial-up here, because our Telecommunications Minister at the time declared: "Anyone who wants high-speed internet is either a criminal or a pedophile." (I'm not kidding).
Australian ministers/politicians, am I right?

While I am not really nostalgic of early to mid 2000's, I'm VERY nostalgic for the late 2000's to early 2010's World Wide Web; that's where I interacted with the global world, especially with YouTube. Thankfully, I didn't see any kind of messed up stuff while surfing through the web as a youngling, it is a blessing <3
