I remember our phone number in Germany. It had six digits.

And who can forget 867-5309? (Even if they wanted to.)

Speaking of which, a friend of mine said that companies that give out discounts for "members" with phone numbers on file (like Safeway) usually have someone in your area who has used this number, with the appropriate area code, when applying for that membership. This means that you can use this number to get the discount, even if you aren't a member.

In my hometown, only 4 numbers were necessary clear up until I was in high school.
