Questions and comments about rules and how the board works

In the rules, unauthorized advertising is not allowed, which is understandable. I have a question about our published texts and work, will there be an area where you are allowed to share links to your published works? This could be for forum members who have been members for x time. To keep away one-off spammers.

Question two:
Are you allowed to share your homepage or personal website/social media page on your profile or somewhere?

Just double-checking that Workshop posts aren't visible to non-logged in members. Sorry to be paranoid about this. I've spent quite a lot of time on the thing I want to post in there, and don't want to accidently disqualify it from submissions.

yes, as it stands if you're not logged in you can't even see that the workshops exist... that will change because we want new folk to know we have a workshop just not to see the threads init

Hmm, the character limit is 10,000 which is lower than the old forum. It's restricting as far as posting completed work for critique, but I know 2000 words is optimal for getting feedback. Ah well.

we're going to change it when we work out how - 10k is the xen foro default... incidentally it was alwayts 10k on the old forum too it was just that the restriction didn't work after 2022

for now if you want to post something longer than 10k characters split it over two posts

in time probably, we've got vague thoughts about a members bookshop with affiliate links and all sorts of good stuff but thats a little way off, more short term when you get to active member 30 days/100 posts you can put upto two links in your sig and theres a slot on your profile for a home page under personal details (that needs to be writing related not a spam link obvs)

I read the rules and was wondering what the stance is on posting fanfic to the workshop. Because it’s a weird gray area. I did not create Kirk and Spock, but I did brainstorm the concept of them going to the escape room.

Also, a lot of thought goes into fanfic and can rival original novels in terms of creativity.

no problem with fan fic so long as you acknowledge that its fan fic... I can't imagine gene rodenburry getting up in our shit about it, not least because he's dead, but if a writer did request we remove fan fics of their specific works we would likely do so

Some franchises (looking at you, Warhammer 40k) really don't like fanfic. Something to bear in mind.

Setup > Options > Messages, Moose

I boosted it to 60K. According to Google, 10K characters is ~1600 words, so this would be 10K words. That seems plenty long enough but we can discuss.

Regarding word length for contests, I don't see how increasing the maximum word count would discourage participation. If anything, you're less likely to have your story read and considered the longer it gets.

Cool, thanks! Glad to know.

As for @Naomasa298's words, I am aware. I have been writing fics so long that there are certain books I don't read. Because the author's a jerk and won't let fans write fics. (Like that one vampire story writer....)

It seems like that we get emails about new posts by default, which wasn't the case for the old forum. Are there plans to keep it that way?

I get the language thing, but irl I curse like a sailor on leave and I tend to lean heavily toward morally gray characters who often share that proclivity. So how heavily do I need to edit my stories? (I'm  usually very good about editing myself)

Edit: Also - will there be an age gated section at any point for erotica and the stuff that we don't want kids reading, or will that not be a possibility in this new one?

you can change it in your profile...again we'll have to look at how we change the defaults

I can't speak for the mods, but on the old forum, that was mostly fine on there if it served a narrative purpose and it wasn't gratuitous.

so do I , and not really at all in your writing in the workshop. In terms of how you communicate no ones going to be too offended if you don't tear the fucken ass outa that shit :D

we're not currently planning an erotica board because they are a big pain to moderate how far is too far...but if theres a big demand for it along with someone who wants to be the section mod we might look at it down the road

Amusingly, someone's posted a rather poorly written sex story on the old forum, now that the adults have left the room.
