Hello everyone! The Roleplay Forum is ALIVE!! I'm your Mini-Mod, Luxuria!

So, I wanted to ask if anyone is interested in creating or participating in a roleplay game. I know there is the Tavern one, but that's a legacy RP from the old site. I would love to start new and bring in some new players. So, feel free to post your ideas about what kind of Roleplay game you want. This forum specializes in written Round Robin Roleplays. That means that three or more players are writing a story together with a collective group of characters. Think of this like a table where writers pass the page around. Each person adding more to the story that came before it and so on.

Also, know you can run your own games AND participate in others. So, go wild and crazy, but also be responsible! Don't join more roleplays than you can handle or create some that just collect dust. Because I will sweep this place every 90 days. This story, this roleplay, will be YOUR story and YOUR responsibility. It's like a sourdough starter- needs lots of love and care, but makes delicious bread.

So, what kind of roleplays would you all like to create?

I want something to commemorate/begin fresh on the new forum. I think going for Fantasy again would be neat. I think this time, maybe one set in a castle with royalty? It could be a slice-of-life royal family story and they have a big magical secret or something. Thoughts?

I made a roleplay proposal form for those who wish to run their own story. I am aware plot and lore will change over time. But for this, your best guess is best. If you have questions, please let me know. I would love for anyone who wants to create a roleplay to fill out this form and submit it here.

Hello, I'd be interested. I was big in written role-play many years ago. Met a good friend doing that, and her and I have continued our stories through email for the last 15 years. It'd be great to get back into a group again.

Basically, yes, like the technology stopped evolving with the steam engine in the Victorian Era. Time carried on, but everything is based on steam technology. Computers powered by steam engines, coffee pots powered by little steam engines, robots powered by steam engines, little pellets of coal instead of batteries. And airships. Lots of airships, with everyone festooned with goggles, spyglasses, blunderbusses, and cool hats! Very often the steam shit coexists wanesthetic. Or different fantasy races. Perdido Street Station by China Mieville is one of the best books ever. I highly suggest checking that out to get a feel for the aesthetic.

I guess this is why it's called speculative fiction

Once upon a time I ran and participated in several RPs on the old forum, and I've been an RPer since the bygone days of Rhydin in the AOL 2.0 chat RP scene. I am dusty and my bones ache but I would honored to participate in this new chapter of the community.
I would love to have you join in on a game (or however many you would like.) I used to RP on Gaia Online back in the day, so a little further in the future, but a similar kind of era. Don't worry about being rusty, the writing of the RP forum is set to casual. So, it doesn't have to be a work of art- it is meant to be fun. Would you like to participate and/or run a game?

Awesome! And haha, I did Email RP with a former friend of mine ages ago, too. It's always such fun. And yeah! I'd love to have you in the group. Would you be interested in also participating and/or running a game?
Fantasy is my bread and butter, but I also like steam punk, supernatural, historical...The only thing I don't really do is futuristic/spacey sci fi.
Good to know. Would everyone like me to make a poll? (If that's possible?) Then, we can see which genres people are most interested in and go from there.

@Louanne Learning I am looking forward to your game, too. :) I think having a variety of games for players to choose is the way to go.

I'm pretty sure I have decided to make the genre for the new roleplay steampunk.

I'm creating the setting and lore right now, and want to have this story begin in 1852 Shanghai, China, in an alternate universe.

While there will be some similarities to the real Shanghai, there will also be some significant differences.

Should I call the city Shanghai or make up a fictional name for the city?

I would say do what you want with the name. It is up to you. :)

Here is my proposal for my new roleplay. Once I have the go-ahead, I am ready to open the OOC and Character Index threads (I have two characters created). I'm still open to titles for the roleplay, if anyone would like to suggest something based on the information below.

Roleplay Title: The Jade Empire

Roleplay Genre:
Steampunk/Alternate Universe (more to be posted in the OOC thread about the steampunk genre)

Roleplay GM: Louanne Learning

Setting: 1858, in an alternate universe, in Shanghai, China, situated at the mouth of the Yangtze River.

The original walled city is Chinese-controlled, under the administration of the Qing dynasty. It retains its traditional character, with narrow lanes, low-rise wooden houses, teahouses, temples, and a dense population of Chinese residents.

Foreign settlements and Western power are found outside the city walls. The British, American and French presence—traders, missionaries, offices, churches, homes—is well established.

Shanghai is a key port for the export of tea, silk, and porcelain, and the import of opium, textiles, and manufactured goods. It’s a fusion, and a collision, of Eastern and Western commercial systems, with a current (1858) population of approximately 250,000.

Note: The story may eventually make its way to the mountains to the west, maybe to the ruins of ancient Chinese civilization. I’d like to see a grand quest in the making.

Basic Story Lore:

Shanghai’s dual nature consists of Confucian values, Chinese opera, ancestral halls and bustling markets co-existing with Anglican churches, Western-style homes and English-language newspapers.

People tend to be classified as the Elemental People (the Yuánsù), or the Developed People (the Fādá). Examples of Elemental People are traders, farmers and hunters. The Developed People live a more multi-faceted existence based on science, philosophy and rational thought.

The British, American, and French—even if they have been there for years—are considered Foreigners.

This will be a story of conflicts—between Eastern and Western values, and between good and evil. I hope to develop strong protagonists and antagonists, and an epic battle.

Note: Despite the Chinese setting, we will be posting only in English, please.

Number of Players wanted – 3-7

I love this. I have 1 additional rule to add in regard to antagonists: they are still bad guys, but can't be used a personal/political mouthpiece regarding past or current world affairs. This is an alternate universe setting and so the timeline/events are different. Please take any political thoughts to a political forum.

Do you agree with this rule, Louanne?

Sure! I will add it to the list of rules that I post on the OOC thread.
Then your roleplay is APPROVED.

@Louanne Learning please make the following:

1 RP OOC thread in the Roleplay Discussion
1 Official Roleplay Thread in the Official Roleplay
1 Character Index & 1 Lore thread in the Roleplay Encyclopedia.

If you encounter an issue with set up, story content or players, do not hesitate to contact me or if the problem is greater than my abilities as mini-mod, such as grievous breaking of rules, please contact a full mod.

Please feel free to make an announcement post on this thread. I will consider making a 'open RP thread' where current games are listed for people who wish to join.

Thank you.
