Suggestions and ideas

Pretty much its too late - we turned the boards off in the node list to keep the scraper bots out... you can still get to them if you have a direct link, and the search might work (but equally might not, the search on the old site is shit)... theres also a strong chance of it going down for good tommorow (unless daniel somehow scrapes up the cash to pay the server fee and remembers to do so. flying pigs etc)

anyway once you get to the actual thread concerned you can either use print to pdf or screenshot to save it a page at a time, pdf is better because you can cut and paste text from it..
Oh, blast. Not what I wanted to spend the rest of the evening doing, but oh, well.

The only other option would have been to use a scraper, but to do that you had to do it before we turned the node display off. I could turn it basck on but that'd let all the other scrapers in too so i'm not inclined to do so. If I'd had access to the datavase i'd have allowed member downloads, but its not something i can do.

There is of course a bout a 0.0001% chance of daniel paying the server fee, banning me and homer and starting the site up again while making lots of pretty promises about how it will all be different this time... trust me it won't, 19 years of history with him tells us that if he goes that route he'll check in daily for a litle while then get distracted and let the site fall on its ass in couple of months time.

I was wondering whether this is possible and/or if people think this is a good idea, if all stories posted in the Non-Fiction Workshop be all anonymous?

I suggest this largely because non-fiction tends to dig a lot deeper into a writer's personal feelings and (from experience) they can angst or open confessions to the world to sorry (none of which I think is an issue) but having your name may lead to changing views towards a writer.

My reasoning for this suggestion is that in the competitions here, everything submitted is anonymous, thus there is no bias and a good story win based on the strength of the piece. With the Non-Fiction Workshop it shouldn't be a tribute or sympathy words to moving pieces, but a workshop to provide some thoughts to help improve a piece. Maybe a writer simply wants a reaction, but a workshop... is a place to help sport errors etc.

Writing under the anon name can provide a shield for the writer and encourage constructive feedback.

To give an example:
It would be tough for a writer to offer constructed views to a friend whose background they may know. Instead of feeling their emotions from a piece, the writer already knows where their feelings emanate from and their feedback is at a disadvantage to the author. True, that a writer may 'sense' that this is their friend, but this is if they know a little about each other. Writing friends here may just be writers who engage through stories and writing etc and do not delve too much into personal life, so to post an emotional piece may change that dynamic.

I feel all posts being Anon will give a little protection to the author, but also allow the reviewer the clarity that we can comment on this piece and that the Non-Fiction workshop can be used to offer suggestions and not used as a space to share angst or wanting sympathy. That section should be a sensitive space for writers and a little privacy, I feel, can help authors use it as help to improve a piece of writing that is very close to their heart.

Not happening I’m afraid if it’s too sensitive to post with your already semi anonymous username attached it shouldn’t be posted at all

Also requesting crit anonymously makes it harder to spot people who are all take and no give, and because replies would also be anonymous it would make some people more likely to troll

I’m not aware of any problem ever developing from a non fiction writer being named on the old site so don’t see any reason to change

We used to have an autobiography section though, and it seems (judging by the number of people who I've seen mention writing them), it seems to be a fair amount of interest in doing that, although no one has posted one here yet.

That was a subsection of the non fiction… and the same applies as ever.. if there’s sufficient pieces posted we’ll split things up, if there aren’t we won’t. I’ll sort some prefixes out for non fiction when I get a minute

Speaking of tags - could there perhaps be a sticky made of what overall separates/identifies a piece as each genre? For new folks I think it would be helpful and even for old ones (like me) who sometimes still aren't sure exactly which tag fits best for pieces that fit multiples. Particularly since we'll be limiting tags (which is a good thing, imo).

There's a lot of pages here, so apologies if already suggested.

Can we get a "thanks" emote? I sometimes just want to thank someone without having to clog up a thread.

I suppose so, if that's how others normally see it. I always just took it as, "alrighty." Or ,"like" But, I'll give it a whirl, see how it feels.

"Thanks" is a regular reaction emoji over on .com, though it might be custom. They also have pretty limited reaction options. Personally I'd like to see more. Maybe some kind of celebration emoji, a sympathetic one like the hug, the scream, and just a simple smile that isn't a LOL.

🥳🫂:eek::D

I still want the 🤠. Because he has beer. But yes, I think we need a new 'love' emoji.

We’ve got lots of emojis, but I guess people are talking about the reaction ones

The irony here is that we are writers if we want to communicate an emotion more complicated than the eight stock reaction emojis can we could use our words

We have six, it's .com that has eight.

Still six is enough to express most common emotions given that on the old site we just had a like button

My preference is that if we just like something we use a thumbs up and for more complicated things we use our words.

We’re not Facebook we’re a site for writing and writers who really ought to be able to express ourselves without relying on pictures and animation

We’ll see what we can do about adding a thanks but like Homer I’m not in favour of a whole bunch
