Suggestions and ideas

One thing we used to do way back when was allow people to discuss stories and give feedback after the voting was over. We stopped it because some authors didn't want feedback. I think we should bring that back - it's more of an incentive for people to get involved. But if an entrant doesn't want it, they should be allowed to specify that when they post their entry.

frankly we stopped it because Ex weed farmer and another member i won't name were being colossal dickheads and giving horribly harsh crit to stroke their own over inflated egos... these days i'd just ban them but that was in the days before i became an admin... also discussing after is one thing but there was also a major issue with the people concerned giving it while voting was going on

When we get a medal engine, I suggest making both participating in, and voting in competitions X times earn a medal. We need people to vote even if they're not participants.

cant be done if voting is anonymous we could makje entering earn a trophy (not a medal) but voting is harder

i don't think we're planning on judges tbh - forum voting has always worked fine before
Yeah like I said, the best way to determine winners will depend on the level of participation. If we're averaging, say, a dozen stories per contest, then it'd make sense to move to a judging model rather than expecting users to read that many stories.

There have been a few short story contests on the old site where there were like 5 stories averaging 2500+ words, and I just had to say sorry, that's too much for me right now.

As for comments while the contest is still going on, yep looks like we still have
a spoiler function.

That won't be a thing. If you don't want feedback, don't enter. Only the strong survive.
that isnt why we stopped it - we stopped it becaause a clique of members were using it as an excuse to bully people and a lot of people were saying they were put off entering by the toxic vibe. When i told the ring leader to stop he told me that we should appreciate him donating his work to the site and he didn't understand why his unique insight wasn't valued more...shortly after that his value was established with a ban hammer by another mod

And, Moose, can we slap something on the banner, too? Anything that says something other than Xenforo, even if it's crayon? I have no idea how to do that.
Done with some basic text... I'll post the detail on how into the staff room

I have no problem with the present (recent past) system of if you want feedback, chuck it in the Workshop when the voting is done. Perhaps leave a link in the comments to the original entry that directs there. I think just having a "feedback/critique is Workshop only" rule is probably simpler than trying to enforce date limits on feedback/limits on how much crit you can give in the Contest vs Workshop portions.

Wow. I missed some fun sounds like. Ego with a capital A.S.S.

I don't remember being able to comment on stories before the contest was over. Could only vote as the thread was locked after all entries were in or something?

I also remember it being anonymous and I very much like that. I don't like wondering if people liked/disliked my story or my big mouth 🤣

Will there be a contributor/guardian type thing? While of course not everyone can contribute, it's not really fair for @Homer Potvin to shoulder all of the financial weight when others could help, however minimally.
