The Jade Empire - OOC Thread

Finally! My post is up!

It's great! You've got Min and Rennie out together in the wilderness.

From what I know about Rennie, he would not have invited Min to join him, so in my next post I'll make it clear that Min just tagged along, much to Rennie's consternation.

Okay - I am up next!

I have created a new character - Shan - who will make an appearance in the entry I am currently working on.

I have just learned today that the words Tao and Dao - when referring to "The Way" - in spiritual and philosophical terms - are indeed interchangeable - but Dao did not come into use until the 20th century, so going forward we should refer to The Tao (Taoist) only.

New entry is up!

@ellekaldwin - you're up next!

Min's infodumping was a surprise!

Also, I forgot about the bikes and had them just walking the whole time! Should I edit my bit to make it mesh better?

Yeah it's okay! No worries! I just didn't expect her to expunge her entire backstory onto poor Rennie XD

I was trying to think of a way to have Rennie accept her tagging along and I thought the best way would be by her overpowering whatever resistance he might offer

The Taiping Rebellion - between the Qing dynasty and the rebels - was raging in the setting our characters are traveling through.

It is something I think we'll have to figure into our story.

I'll make up a brief list of facts about the rebellion and post it to the Lore thread.

@ellekaldwin @buttercream @Whiskii

I've made a brief post to the Lore thread about the Taiping Rebellion, copied below the link.

***
The Taiping Rebellion was a massive civil war (1850-1864) in Qing dynasty China. It began among poor peasants and disaffected groups, fueled by poverty, corruption, and ethnic tensions. The rebels promoted radical reforms, like equality of land distribution, shared property, bans on opium, alcohol, gambling and gender inequality. The Qing dynasty struggled to supress the rebellion, eventually relying on regional armies.

Both sides engaged in mass killings, scorched-earth tactics, and the burning of villages. The rebellion devastated much of central and eastern China. Millions were killed.

(British and French forces did not enter the war until around 1860, on the side of the Qing, to protect their economic interests.)

One place that we might take our story to is the city of Nanjing. The Taiping captured it in 1853, and renamed it Tianjing (“Heavenly Capital”). In 1858 (the year of our story), they still hold it.

So, this information can be a source of new plot ideas.

My entry's up! Took some liberties on how steam powered bikes function (I assume they need to be recharged....with like, i don't know, water?) So having all the characters stop and talk felt necessary. Put them all on the same page and the same path, even though they may not know what it is they're moving towards.

You've done a fantastic job! I love that you wrote from Rennie's POV, and you did an amazing job capturing him!

Edits made to Rennie's dialogue that @Louanne Learning kindly pointed out was incorrect. Made the lad Scottish just like the Lord intended.

And @buttercream @Whiskii, if there's anything I write that mischaracterizes your characters, please let me know. If It's big plot related things, I'll reach out privately, but even if it's something more minor, but still important, like the dialogue, I wanna make sure I'm doing your characters justice.

We welcome to The Jade Empire the new character Bertrand Veltheim - created by @Whiskii
