I was going through my lists to do some submitting today (I sent off six!) and I thought, well, since I have reviewed dozens of magazines and picked out the ones that are open, or made a note of some that are opening soon, why not save other fellow submitters some time by sharing them here?

NOTE - I am only ever going to post for PAYING markets, and ones that pay decently. Not just like $5-10 or whatever.

I only write SFFH, so those are the only kinds of publications you'll see in my posts here. Today's specials are:

Open Submissions! — Sans. PRESS - open til Sept. 15 but they pay a LOT - themed anthology: No Gods No Masters

Three-Lobed Burning Eye Magazine - Submissions Guidelines - open til Sept. 16, better hurry !

Submission Guidelines - Trollbreath Magazine - open til Sept. 30

Beneath Ceaseless Skies - Submissions by Scott H. Andrews - open - no close date mentioned

Submissions - open now - they might always be open

Opening Soon:

https://ffo.submittable.com/submit - Oct. 1

https://crimsonquillquarterly.com/ - Oct. 1

https://polarborealis.ca/submission-guidelines/ - Oct. 1

https://inner-worlds.ghost.io/submission-guidelines/ - Oct. 1 for everyone except heterosexual white males, Oct. 15 for everyone, including them

https://cosmicrootsandeldritchshores.com/guidelines/ - 1st and 2nd day of each month

Totally agreed.

Let me give one more tip - learn as much as you can about the magazine's preferences. Just because it says "horror" or "fantasy", it doesn't mean they're open to ANY horror or fantasy. Each magazine has its own editorial preferences, and submitting a story that falls outside that is a quick road to a hard "no". I recently had one tell me that "animal abuse", in their preferences, includes eating meat.

Oh yeah, no doubt. Always read their guidelines carefully and make sure you're not wasting their time or yours.

This is such a great thread. Thanks @Set2Stun. I use Duotrope which covers a lot of these but its still easy to miss stuff, especially when you're balancing a lot of stuff like I am. It's also good to have a place to share experiences about editors and magazines to get a better sense of them

Yeah, I hope it helps all of us shorts/flash submitters who might not have all the same lists. I subscribe to Sub Club and Authors Publish, which often mention markets that I've never seen on Duotrope (which is great, and I have a subscription to 'em).

I think it will also serve as reminders for publications we're already are aware of, that they're open for submissions. Sometimes a magazine that I've had an eye on only has a submission period of a few days, or a week or two, and I miss it. So, I hope others will share here some places to submit to when they're open, regardless of genre.

But - I'd really prefer that only paying markets are mentioned here. For free ones, I'd say just start a new thread.

I also keep lists of publications I've dealt with favourably, as well as those I know their editorial preferences, and they become my first choice go-tos.

I should also mention, for those unfamiliar with it, that you can also search Duotrope for agents who are accepting queries, not just publications, so it's useful for novel writers too.
