Thread for Magazines Accepting Submissions

3LBE has rejected eight of my stories thus far. I don't think I have anything left to send them at the moment 😅

Lol, just sent them my first one.

And I also said before that I'd never see myself submitting to Seize The Press, but they're open too, and I just did. Such is the pressure of the capitalist system. :p

Mark your calendars for this one and get your sci-fi stories ready!

"Strange Horizons will open to general fiction submissions on January 19th, 2026, at 3 p.m. UTC! This window will remain open for 48 hours, closing at 3 p.m. UTC on January 21st, 2026." Up to 10K words, pays 10c/word.

The Phantom Pulse (The Phantom Pulse – a speculative fiction magazine) is accepting SFFH up to 3K words until February 14th. They pay 3c/word.

*ahem*

Strange Horizons opens for general submissions for 48 hours on Jan 19th at 3pm UTC.

:) Worth repeating though.

I had a look at Phantom Pulse, but the word limit is too low for me.

They're open at the moment for themed submissions, not general ones, meaning any story you submit has to match their theme.
Yes but:

"We are currently closed to General Fiction and Poetry submissions. Look for us to re-open on January 1st."

I guess they meant "sometime after January 1st"...

Well, I wouldn't worry about it. It's relatively new, and they seem to be crowdfunding their next publication cycle. They're probably waiting to meet their crowdfunding goal before reopening. The fact that they are open for some submissions suggests they're not defunct.

While they're always open for submission and published new stories every Monday, I like their websites and believe they are a good start for new writers who want their stories to be published without the headaches of constant rejections.

When I started out, I was aiming for venues like this. But I don't now. For one thing, not every writing credit is equal.

But more importantly, if it's a venue that accepts half of its submissions, then there's no pressure on you to improve. I mean, you could post your story on Facebook, or Wattpad and the effect is similar, plus, your being published is guaranteed.

Rejections are frustrating, but they're part of the game. It's just how the industry works. You could be Gene Wolfe, and your story could still be rejected, because it doesn't align with a magazine's aesthetics, or because they've accepted a similar story for that edition, or just because the editor stubbed his toe before reading your story. I think most of us have got to the point where rejections, even quick, form ones are neutral. Not that I'd know, I haven't had an acceptance yet.
