What Are You Listening To?

Clair Obscur Lumiere

That game has a beyond fantastic soundtrack!

I find I don't really listen to music in the ordinary sense of the word very much anymore. In the last few years it has been mostly Hindu mantras or various Zen ambient things for me. I put on stuff when I meditate or sleep, or some nice ambient stuff for writing. Like, I'll sometimes put on a pop-cultural banger when I dance around my living room, but for the most part the old way I interacted with music is gone. Kind of a shame, because I love music in all its forms, but everything has its proper place.

Here's one I use a lot when I do my quasi tai chi business, or for sitting meditation. It's a bit too lively for deep meditation, in my view, but sometimes it works for a brief, casual session.

Here's another that I've used for deep journeys. I've gotten to some very far-out places with this one.

And one for those who just wants to vibe and dance. Come on, do a flip!

Goth and post-punk is the way for me (with a pinch of Metalcore)

Of course there's always video game and anime music.

But here's a band I found while scrounging for music. The Victoriana does the happiest goth-adjacent music I've ever heard, with this interesting (Victorian-esque) aesthetic that I immediately fell in love with

As well as Motorama, a post-punk band from Russia. I find their music relaxing. I'd recommend their album, Sleep, and I Will Sing

The Killers always puts me in mind of The Kills, great band with punk sensibility, but this is one of their softer efforts, just gorgeous.

On foot of flooding Random Thoughts thread with music videos, going back here for one that has one of my favourite quotable lines:
you never understood what she's trying to say
she talks so clear that the words get in the way
and then from first thing that comes to mind, a quote from Education by Modest Mouse (Johnny Marr on guitar on this record, I think)

Unironically enjoying a bit of Dragonforce. Sometimes a bit of stupidly extreme power metal is the only thing that'll hit the spot. Their drummer has to be an android. Has to be.

Oh, and it's worth pointing out their cover of My Heart Will Go On (the Celine Dion one) is incredible for making me laugh all the way through. It's the anti-Shatner's Common People. Shatner has no self-awareness. Dragonforce have rather a lot.

After hearing that Tom Lehrer has passed away (nooo!), I'm listening to this. One of my favourite Lehrer songs.

Two, four, six, eight -- time to transubstantiate! :)

Thanks for the words, the music, and the memories, Tom.
