What are you reading?

Currently 220-odd pages deep in Stephen King's The Dead Zone, only my second King novel so far, the first being 11.22.63

Next up will be The Stand which is a door stop of a book and might take me until next year to complete

Wayward by Blake Crouch. It's the second book from The Wayward Pines series. I read the first one after watching the 1st season of the show, so the big reveal came as no surprise. That said, it was still an awesome read. Heart pounding at times, good mix of dystopian and sci-fi.

Not that far into the second book, but I'm enjoying it so far.

After a bit of a hiatus, I returned to El Borak and Other Desert Adventures, a collection of short fiction starring Robert E. Howard’s adventure heroes El Borak, Kirby O’Donnell, and Steve Clarney. I finished “Hawk of the Hills” last night, and now I’m on to “Blood of the Gods”.

Finished “Blood of the Gods” last night, and this passage stuck out to me, because it’s an almost perfect embodiment of the classic advice to make your characters want something, even if it’s just a glass of water:

“He slipped the limp bags from his shoulder, cocked his rifle and went forward to kill or be killed—not for gold, nor the love of a woman, nor an ideal, nor a dream, but for as much water as could be carried in a goatskin bag.”

Finished His Black Tongue yesterday, and today's audiobook was Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and learned a shit ton about something I didn't know was still a modern problem.

I just read Twisted Love by Ana Huang. Woo wee, that is a bit out of my usual romance reads I've done. More possessive, rougher adult scenes. But I did like Ana's voice and the cute scenes she had Ava and Alex in. I can see how she's a best selling author. But I think it will take some time to get used to that type of romance.

Listening to Sarah Penner's The Lost Apothecary. She continues to frustrate me with her anachronisms and inaccuracies. Like a lower-class woman in 1791 London thinking in centimeters when the French didn't adopt the metric system till 1795 and Great Britain didn't start using it till 1965 and didn't make it mandatory for trade until 1995. And a late 18th century "apothecary's vial" with a neck big enough to admit large chicken's eggs.

I don't think so.

I'm listening to a Stephen King story, the name of which escapes me at this moment. It's about a kid who sees ghosts. I finished Shawshank Redemption recently and thought I'd listen to something by the same author, but more horror-ish. I'm reading Passenger to Frankfurt by Agatha Christie and working my way through a fairly deep pile of papers written about the Civil War west of the Mississippi, specifically in Arkansas and southern Missouri.

I'm so far gone I've been slowly studying a usage dictionary. Garner's Modern English Usage vol. 5 to be exact.
It's fascinating to me. One thing I learned is that if you think the original phrase is, "you've got another thing coming," then you've got another think coming.

"A Confederacy of Dunces," by John Kennedy Toole.
Oh my God! That book is a masterpiece. An especially special treat is the only official audiobook ever made of it. The narrator gets all the accents down perfectly. And after reading The Unfilmable Confederacy of Dunces: How Ignatius J. Reilly Defeated Hollywood, I'm pretty sure it's sadly the closest we'll ever get to a live-action recorded performance of the book. 😭
Sad about the writer

Just a heads up - in the dark romance genre Twisted Love is considered a 'gentle and fluffy' entry level book and most readers don't accept it as worthy of the term 'dark'. Just in case you're referring to that part and not just the explicitness of it all. Meant as a gentle warning and not a judgement at all.

I really like the TransDimensional Hunter series by John Ringo & Lydia Sherrer, I really, really like the way the character of Lynn Raven is portrayed in the books. So I have been re-reading "Into the Real" (book #1) and "Through the Storm" (book #2).

Now....I *KNEW* that the next book in the series would be out this summer, and it is due to be released on August 5!!!! "Beyond the Veil" (book #3)

BUT....when I googled.....holy......there's a LOT of hate for John Ringo. Even a t-shirt with the caption of, "OH NO.....JOHN RINGO.....NO!!!" or something. He apparently endorsed the -t-shirt idea and the proceeds were donated to an organization that works to rescue women that were forced into prostitution.

I suppose if the books are selling, he must be doing something right. And if he can get people to buy a t-shirt that promotes his name and helps victims of sex trafficking, then more power to him.

Back to the topic....AUGUST 5 is ALMOST HERE!!!!!!!

I've been dabbling with Conn Iggulden for the first time. It may be the last. Nero wasn't great - a little too simplistic for a book that should have been as full of twists and turns as a... twisty-turny thing. It's certainly bloodstained, though. It felt too much like (yes, snobbery) a book read for a busy executive who doesn't want to think and wants to imagine himself a student of Rome. All in all, not for me.

I have just finished reading: RAGE - (830 + pages). It was written by one of my favourite novelists; Wilbur Smith.

The setting was 1950’s South Africa during the beginning of apartheid. Although the setting is about 10 to 15 years before my time, I can relate to it as I experienced living through it during the 70’s & 80’s.
