What made me happy today?

I'm happy because I'm one assignment away from complete freedom until October.

There is lots I want to do. I inherited a car this February and have been slowly working on restoring it to a drivable condition. It now fully drives but it's got issues. First one being... it's dirty as hell inside.

It's been away on a bodywork shop for weeks (it had big holes in the roof and that's not something I could fix on my own) and I just received it yesterday. I noticed two other slightly worrying issues:
  1. The cooling system's liquid is so full of rust particles, it's gone from green to brown. I actually flushed that stuff out several times and it's still coming back. I have no idea where from.
  2. The aluminum manifold for the transmission fluid intake has developed a small crack. It's at the top so it's not leaking, but I've got to either find a replacement or patch that hole entirely.
That might seem like a post for the unhappy thread, but actually, I really look forward to tackling these issues in my incoming spare time. It's like a fun puzzle.

For now though, it's report writing time...

its either rust residue in the coolant tank or more likely your radiator is rusty on the inside...i'd be inclined to get a newer one from a scrap yard and swapo them over

in ref of the manifold you can probably fill the crack with bondo or similar... be very careful welding if you go that route transmission fluid vapor is flamable, and so are aluminum shavings if yo get them hot enough

There is a lot of rust. Like, a hell of a lot. I dip my finger in the tank and it gets coated in the stuff. You're right that it's probably the radiator. Something in the system is extremely rusty. When I first got it and I opened the tank, I saw that most of the coolant somehow evaporated away and left behind this chunky mould-like stuff. It was gross. My guess is that this mess accelerated the oxidation process like crazy.

I plan on doing another flush with a specialized cleaning solution and hope that melts the remaining rust. If not, I'll probably end up having to get another one like you say.

Great gardening day today. My neighbor had a couple of bushes he wanted to get rid of, so we dug them out, wheelbarrowed them across the street, and replanted. Took forever, but well worth it. My folks came up to help, and we got all the hedges trimmed, and the garden beds tilled, all the edges straight, grass-seeded, fertilized, weeded. Didn't do the bark mulch yet. That's nearly an all day project with the 40+ bags we need. Best part was the whole neighborhood was out landscaping. Somebody needs a spring rake but didn't have one, we got you covered. Ran out of grass seed? Got you covered. Even the standoffish couple across the street managed to smile. Just a great day all around.
