What made me unhappy today ?

My husband is a musician who likes most kinds of music, and who was a true devotee of sixties rock. I've trundled along to concerts with him, but doubt I could name all the members of any band ever in existence with the exception of The Beatles and The Monkees. (The latter came along when I was eleven, and I was smitten.) I was mostly a folk and country western fan until my husband took me to see The Moody Blues in Denver in 1979. Illumination.

My most, um, "illuminating" concert was one by Deep Purple, which involved some seriously-laced marijuana that resulted in my being convinced that instead of being inside a concert hall I was in the bowels of a deep cavern and the stuff going on on stage was some sort of pagan ritual being pushed along by incessant drumbeat. Which, listening to some of their stuff again, may not have been too far off. The worst part was finding my car afterward.

Moose, you basically just described my knowledge of these things to a T. I’m spooked.

Actually you and Homer are both right. There is no reason why a young person should know much if anything about the Beatles, the same way I have only the vaguest awareness of the music of the 1930s and 40s. Unless of course that person is a musician, perhaps. But no obligation.

And I wasn't really surprised or disappointed or anything like that. It just stung a bit. I guess I'm being dragged, kicking and screaming -- and soon enough flailing about with my cane -- into the 21st Century.

A lot of people who've heard of the Beatles probably can't name all the members... even in the UK most people know about Lennon and McCartney, but couldnt necessarily name Starr and Harrison, and hardly anyone can name the other short term members. Best, Sutcliffe, Nichol and um... other people.

its the same with even recent bands, like with oasis, most people know about Liam and Noel but couldn't tell you the others, most people know who Kurt Cobain was but couldn't tell you the other members of Nirvana, aside from maybe Dave Grohl because of the Foo Fighters

I'm not asking anyone, let alone a young person, to have an in-depth -- or even cursory -- knowledge of anything about The Beatles. I was, rather, surprised and saddened that some (not all) young people don't even know who The Beatles are.

They weren't just fine musicians, but they also pioneered the music video, influenced many genres from power pop to heavy metal, and even managed their own careers -- and created their own label (Apple Music). Yet now some people don't know who they were.

Like I said, forgive me while I gently weep. With my guitar.

I was 12 in 1980 when Lennon was killed, 3 months into secondary school. I, and others in the group, asked variations of "who's he now?" and "is that a footballer?" when Cully (who grew to detest the nickname) told us the news. It must be said, Lennon had quite the post-Beatles career in his own name, but still, at that age my music access was limited to what my older brothers and sisters had around and the Beatles didn't feature. The Best of the Beatles and The Best of Queen were my joint first record purchases with my own money a couple of years later.

I've never thought to uncover the names of band members, apart from the Doors where I recognised names I'd remember forever, Morriison, Manzarek, Densmore and whatisname on guitar.

Nothing makes me feel as old as the blank looks in response to my cultural references at work. It happens with alarming frequency.

Regarding the whole music discussion going on here, do any of you know who Jean-Philippe Rameau is? No? Bah... kids these days...
I didn't. I do now. When I asked him, my husband confused Rameau with Père Mersenne who invented the modern mathematical basis for even temperment in the 17th century. Even when he's wrong, my husband is erudite. ;)

Even my Japanese pop culture references are out of date at this point. Music my students introduced me to early in my career at the uni is now "mom and dad music." I haven't been here quite long enough to have a second generation student, but the time isn't far off.

When I heard 3 Doors Down on the oldies station about a decade ago, I kind of stared into the void of "wtf" for a few hours. Of course, now that station is the "everything except top 40 hits" station, which is fine, but it was rather a shock before that transition happened.

Exactly! And stuff that used to be controversial or youthful rebellion is now elevator music in the shopping mall...

Robbie Krieger?

Les Indes gallantes or Castor et Pollux? ;)

Out of the blue I was terminated without cause or explanation today from the company I've worked for for 10+ years. Still having trouble wrapping my head around it all. Kind of surprised this is legal in Canada tbh. You can be let go without any reason, and if there's no notice given, they just have to give you some severance based on years of employment.

I have no idea what I am going to do and have been losing my mind all day. In this job market, with gen AI taking over knowledge-based positions, well, I am absolutely boned. Screwed. Fucked. Also nice of them to do this right before the holidays.

My health insurance/benefits are gone in 7 weeks. My cell phone plan terminates tonight/tomorrow. And now I need to do some googling and have some free lawyer consultations this week. No comments about how maybe this is actually a good thing, please, and no offense intended

Not a good thing at all! :( I'm so sorry to hear, Set2Stun.

I know that Canadian law may be different, but here in Australia, only temporary staff can be let go without reason. Contractors and permanents must be given an exit interview, and if they've done something naughty, a chance to mend their ways. (Obviously not if they did something really bad, like show up to work drunk/on drugs, or abused someone verbally/physically, etc.) I wonder if Canadian law is similar? It sounds reasonable that it would be.

I hope your former employers step on Legos for the rest of eternity. (n) What a horrible thing to do to you, especially (as Catriona mentioned) right before the holidays. :(

So your employer health insurance is something above and beyond the national health insurance that all legal residents receive?
