What made me unhappy today ?

Too hot. Too much work to do. Not actually in work this morning as need to take a small child to the hospital, and it's so warm I can't even motivate myself to mow the lawn.

And I'm meant to have a long run tomorrow, when it's going to be even hotter.

My bus got cancelled a couple of days ago and I had to leg it for the train. In my work shoes. So now I have shin splints. Again.

That sucks. Sorry it happened to you, hirudine. :( Hope you feel better soon.

Not judging here. Even if it did sound a bit like that. Ok, maybe a bit judgey, but there's some self reproach going on there too. I'm quite partial to crappy movies myself, sometimes will choose them over something worthy. Stick on a spaceship and a couple of explosions and I'm in. I will say though, as time passes by and I'm increasing unlikely to fall asleep drunk in front of the TV, I'm much less likely to indulge.

I don't know. If there's no story, the acting is laughable, and the special effects are cheesy, I'd just say "Screw it, I'm going to bed." *shrug*

Maybe it's just me...?

Keep hydrating, Dante! :) Fluids are super important when it's hot.

As for me, it's far too cold. :( We're approaching the winter solstice here in Australia. It'll be on Saturday, in 2 days' time. So let's turn it around - it may be cold now, but let's just get through the next few months and it'll warm up again! :)

Why wait to 18 months? We've had a lot of dogs (well over a dozen) and no problems resulting from neutering them well before their first birthdays.

It's what the vet recommends. We had our previous two dogs done a lot sooner too and it never appeared to have a negative impact. The current thinking, however, is that they should grow a bit more first, almost into their adult bodies. It's also not recommended at all for skittish dogs and he is a little bit, though he's settling more each day. All news to me, though some of it may be more breed specific (border collie) but it will happen soon enough.

There was a study on neutering and the potential ramifications (early vs late) published a few years ago. It studied many breeds and made new recommendations based on rates at which certain things occurred after neutering vs waiting until hormones had fully done their job in creating a fully formed adult.

For instance, female Shetland Sheepdogs are recommended to wait until 2 years or older because when spayed before that have a 33% increased in developing severe urinary incontinence (also at a very young age) and male Irish Wolfhounds were changed to 2+ years because of a 25% increase in certain cancers when neutered before that.
There are also several breeds that were changed to 2+ years due to potential joint disorders/diseases when hormones are cut off too early with spay/neuter.

All news to me, though some of it may be more breed specific (border collie) but it will happen soon enough.
In the study I mentioned above, male Border Collies have an 11% increased risk of certain cancers if neutered before 1 year, so the recommendation is "beyond one year" which most Veterinarians give a 6 month buffer for in a dog that is not fully matured, hence the 18 months.

I'll probably need to rewrite what I was writing recently (not a story, different type or text) according to feedback I received, hopefully I won't need to start from scratch. At least I know what I'll be doing in the next month or so.

Reading the phrase "self-depreciating" on the BBC.

Sigh. English is my second language, and even I know that's wrong. The correct phrase is "self-deprecating" ... unless whatever-they're-talking-about's market value just took a nose-dive, and has nothing to blame but itself. :-\

If, rhetorically speaking, the original Mona Lisa fell off the wall and shattered ... then that, my friend, would be a fine example of self-depreciation. :P

Then again, it's the BBC. I've noticed in recent years that the BBC (and the ABC here in Aussie-Land) have little grasp of how English works, which is a sad indictment for both our national broadcasters. =(

Duhh, Ingleesh be hard. Let's stick two pencils up our nose instead. =P

From The Guardian, an opinion piece on a nasty gossip site:

So since Lusitania was an ocean liner, not a cruise ship, I'm not sure what we're supposed to infer. Other than that the professional writer doesn't know that words have meanings and the editor got canned in the last round of layoffs.

Heat index warnings of over 100 until Wednesday. I hate heat waves and the storms that come with them.

My laptop is no longer charging. That stinks! I don't know if it's the cord that's pooched, or if the port on the laptop is the issue. If it's the port, I'm screwed. Only one way to find out.

On the bright side, it's pretty amazing that I can get a replacement adapter shipped here by tomorrow for just $60. What an age we live in. I do all my writing and submissions on this thing, so I guess I'll have a video game afternoon with the PS5 instead.

It could also be the battery, that’s usually favourite when a laptop no longer charges. You can probably get spares

The charging port is common, gets buggered when it catches the cable on things moving the laptop, and it pulls on it. Used to be you could replace the port but they're all integrated into the MB now. They know what they're doin. My wife's i7 with all the bells has this problem, she drags the bloody thing around because money grows on trees, as we all know.

Does it work when plugged in though?
