Okay, I don't agree with this but every time I think of it it makes me laugh. From Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible:

“Sending a girl to college is like pouring water in your shoes,” he still loves to say, as often as possible. “It’s hard to say which is worse, seeing it run out and waste the water, or seeing it hold in and wreck the shoes.”

LOL. I had to look it up to see when it's from and ... sounds about right for the era the story takes place in. It made me laugh too (even while horrified).
