Pin your car's location and use the map or GPS function on your phone next time. I do that in NH when I hike, but there often isn't any service in the mountains.

Yeah, but what kind of story is that? "We went for a walk, checked the phone, realized we were getting too far from our car and turned around."

Seriously, that's a good idea, demanding some grasp of technology just beyond my grasp at the moment, but doable. Bottom line is, this was a walk we've taken several times, so we didn't expect anything different, so didn't plan with any detail. We had no idea the woods were so deep.

What do you mean by "pet minder?"

A pet minder is a person who comes to one's home in one's absence to check on pets, make sure they have enough food and water, give them a little human company, clean the litter box, note any health problems or other pet-related disasters, and deal with those appropriately.

I've had a couple dozen cats over my lifetime. Cats have a reputation for being independent, aloof, antisocial, etc. but that hasn't been my experience with them. They need regular human interaction and miss us when we're gone, even when there are two or more kitties in the household. Folks who intend to regularly leave cats alone with food and water for a week or two at a time should probably rethink the kitty coexistence idea.

That's been my experience with kitties as well. If you regularly interact with them and love them, this is almost always reciprocated. For a long time now, Mittens' main goal in life has been to be within 1-3 feet of myself, whether I'm working, gaming/TV, in bed/sleeping. She just wants to be near. In the Before Times when I worked in the office, she would jump up on my living room table and scream at my door at around the time I'd typically arrive home. But yes, they are generally very low-maintenance and won't especially mind the occasional week or two absence, provided someone does check in on 'em every few days (for indoor cats for sure).

Also, crazy story, Graham. Damn! Glad it all worked out.

I'm glad I booked tomorrow off. I usually take a Friday off here and there for a 3-day weekend, but I am loving this idea of working two days, then getting to sleep in, and then two more work days before the weekend kicks in. I should break up more weeks like this as 4 or 5 days in a row can really feel like a grind.

If it were me, I’d hold off until Spring when the whole house training might be easier with better weather. It gets very cold in winter in your part of the world?

I am sitting here with a heavy robe over my clothes and still freezing my tail off. If this keeps up, I will be forced to put o slippers as well. My husband turned the heat on a few minutes ago. The indoor thermometer says 53 degrees even though the thermostate says 67. Too bad I can't sit up somewhere nearer the ceiling.
