Finally made it home... Elizabeth Taylor is a much better actress. And Second Life is not a game. It's a Social Experience that begins by falling down a virtual rabbit hole.

We're thinking 5 days in Tuscany (close to Florence) and 5 days on the Amalfi Coast

Tuscany is wonderful. Rome, Florence and Venice are all in Tuscany. :) Just a note: Google Maps is not much help in Venice. ;)

I was lucky in booking my Florence hotel. It was overlooking the Piazza di Duomo, so when I opened my window, I saw the famous cathedral. (Full name: Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore).

I also went to see the stunning Galleria Uffizi and Galleria Accademia (for David and other masterpieces), strolled around the Duomo piazza and the iconic Ponte Vecchio bridge, and visited the Pitti Palace & Boboli Gardens. The local food is delicious and not expensive. :)

I haven't been to the Amalfi Coast, sorry. Enjoy your trip! :)

Looked into whether it is better to rely on trains and public transportation or rent a car.

Trains and public transportation would run us about $2000 Cdn per person.

Renting a car (pick-up and drop off Rome airport) could be for as little as $600 total

My husband once had a manual transmission truck, and I learned how to drive it. Wonder how I would do now?

Rome is amazing and I want to go back.

Venice? Never felt more herded, to the point of considering baa baa ing in St Mark's piazza. I know someone who loves Venice, and it is amazing, but she visits friends to stay over several nights, going out when all the tourists have gone.

They do drive on the wrong side of the road in Italy, same as North America. Most aggressive has right of way.

I'm going with my sister and she's been to Rome a couple of times and doesn't want to re-visit so I have to be satisfied with the Florence-Tuscany area and the Amalfi Coast area.

I did read that. It'll put a little less pressure on me if I drive.

Easy boot buying trip: one store, he found a pair he liked in his size, tried 'em on, paid a reasonable price, and out the door we went. My kind of shopping trip: in, score, out.
I've been looking for a store around here that will sell me some Wellingtons. All they have at the Boot Barn, the major boot supplier here in California, are various permutations of "cowboy boots" with higher heels.

Those are called barn boots in this part of the country. Try a farm/ranch supply store like Murdocks or Tractor Supply.
