What she said. Except I will say that even when I deliberately tried to drop out of it all, I always "knew" that anytime I chose, I could drop back in. And true enough, when I chose to, I was able to fall back into school, home ownership, and a career. I think it would be harder nowadays. There was indeed something privileged about being white, middle-class, in mid-America, in the mid 20th century.
