Suggestions and ideas

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the old site there's this practice to prevent (new) members to post for critique before giving at least ten critiques or so, I'd recommend the same practice. Since, as we all know, multiple drafts plays out in slow burn pace and critiquing others gives a kind of safe space to see self fallibility in other's.

Not 10 critiques, but there used to be a number of posts requirement before getting access to the Workshop.

we stopped doing that three years ago.... by and large we want as few barriers to participationin the workshop and site as possible. On the old site we had a lot of people who'd post a story then get told to take it down because reqs werent met and having had that negative interaction would leave, while some of them might have just been drive bys others were likely potentially good members lost

Yeah, I just thought this might be what the poster is remembering. There was never a 10 critique requirement, as far as I can remember anyway.

I think it was 5 when I started (2011), but I wouldn't know if it increased once I hit the minimum or if it was higher before that. It could have been 10.

Current is 1 free and then 2 to 1, right?

First one's free, then 1:1, though how that gets enforced remains to be seen. It was always more about the spirit of the rule than the letter. Participate, help others, don't be a forum abuser, etc. We don't really have the traffic yet for it to be worth making a big deal about, but I imagine down the road it will become a good problem that will need more enforcement.

Apologies for having to mention a certain site 😅

This isn't a huge deal or anything and I don't know if it'd be a pain in the ass to change, but...Well, it's easier to show rather than tell here, heh.

I do like the look better but not sure if it's an option. It could be an add-on they have. I'll take a look, though.

To be honest, I like the way the first one looks. The second one is more readable but it's just an image awkwardly standing on top of your user profile. It feels weird.

This site's implementation makes a lot more sense because it's used as a background. Instead of having a boring white backdrop, you have a nice little image as a background. It's a problem if the image has text (like yours does) but not really if it doesn't.

Another benefit of the background-image design is how the popup is a lot more compact because it combines both into one element. With .com's design, it's a lot taller, which just wastes screen real estate. It doesn't feel smart. Therefore, I can say, this site is superior in terms of this.

But that's just the way I see things. Just an opinion :)

I think it would be a good idea to have a thread with general writing advice, tips and such. Some kind of collaborative effort where you add them to the OP. I've got this file in scriv I call 'bits' where I've c&p useful things from various books and places on the interwebs. Trouble is, I can't remember where most came from since I didn't attribute them since I had no plan to repost them at the time. Duh? And useful links!

I'll give you an example of something I kept, but I cannot for my life remember where the hell I got it, let alone who wrote it:

This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. I vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals—sounds that say listen to this, it is important.

So write with a combination of short, medium, and long sentences. Create a sound that pleases the reader’s ear. Don’t just write words. Write music.

Be nice if we could gather together such wonders.

Feel free to start one if you like. We've been discussing getting the Article section of the Forum going, which would be something similar, but I haven't had much time. Something to kick back onto the front burner.
