Suggestions and ideas

i you mean members advertising their books, like the rotator we used to have (which never worked all that well) we're contemplating a book shop complete with affiliate links but theres a bunch of stuff to work out before we get to that

Yeah, it was that widget that I was referring yo.

we won't be using that exact widget, mostly because it sucked, and the back end access was dreadful... but we're planning something better in due course

Will we be doing a minimum number of posts before the workshop is open to new members at some point? Or number of days or something to further weed out the undesirables before they have access or no? I don't recall if the old site did it that way or not.

No we want the workshop to be as open to new comers as possible... the rule is one freebie then after that at least one given for one asked. We'll deal with undesirables via active moderation

I was more asking if we're worried about thieves, with the acknowledgement that I'm unlikely to have anything worth stealing 🤣

Right now, the forum is being kept to the basics and the research forum is part of the Writing Craft section, I believe. I heard that later on, the mods might organize all of it. But for now I have heard that keeping things simple and slowly expanding is the plan.
But-- but-- but!!! We want it just like the old site but faster and easier and better, right now!!!

:ROFLMAO:

And, Moose, can we slap something on the banner, too? Anything that says something other than Xenforo, even if it's crayon? I have no idea how to do that.
I'm looking forward to an icon on the browser tab, like the yellow quill pen from the .org site. It'll come when it comes, I get that. Unless there's a way I can get it to appear? If so, I forget how.

it might be something we'd look at down the line...but imo thats really about ad management... we 're not going to bombard members with adverts nor are we going to allow sketchy things like ads for vanity publishers.

when we get our ducks in the row there may be things like a forum book shop with affiliate links to amazon where members can advertise their own books, and potentially we might also offer other books about writing, writing products and so forth (for anyone who doesnt know affiliate links don't cost the author anything extra, but amazon pay a percentage of anything bought through the link).

i'm not going to promise because theres a lot to talk about and sort out, but theres a lot a site like this with a present and engaged owner can do to fund itself in a way that also benefits its members
I like the bookshop with affliliate links idea. Especially when I've been supporting fellow members through the book-writing process. It'd make it clear that the work was out and available.

we need to upload the artwork to make that happen...
It wouldn't say whose work anyone voted for, though? Wouldn't it just be like the "I Voted" sticker you get after going to the polls?
but if voting is anonymous we don't know who voted
I take it the animated emojis are no longer available? I really liked the swordfight, beating-the-dead-horse, and the hug.

(If they aren't, they aren't.)
We probably could but i'm not certain we want a load of animations on the pages one to discuss

its such a small risk its not worth worrying about - the only exception being AI scraper bots but they can't see the forum because the workshop in unindexable

:ROFLMAO:

we;re gradually building out, lots of empty forums is bad for SEO so for example the plot, setting and character are all in one board for now, we'll split them up when we we have enough content

I've been having fun reacting to the previous posts in this thread. Here's what I came for, though, and please tell me if I should ask it in another place:

What is the step-by-step method for downloading threads from the old site? I'd like to preserve my Progress Journal, and some crucial (to me) research threads. I've been poking around, but I'm not sure what to click.

My goal is to get it onto my own drive, but I may as well ask, is anything like that going to be migrated over?

Thanks.

I fully understand. It's just the little kid in me who wants all the cake NOW.

BTW, Moose: Isn't it nearly 1:00 AM for you? Go to bed!

But do you need to? I thought there were medal engines that could automatically award medals rather than them having to be manually awarded, similar to the trophies/achievements (whatever they're called) and allow manual awards as well.

Maybe do what @ps102 suggested on the old site and print each page of the thread to a PDF? You still have to do it for each page though.

Pretty much its too late - we turned the boards off in the node list to keep the scraper bots out... you can still get to them if you have a direct link, and the search might work (but equally might not, the search on the old site is shit)... theres also a strong chance of it going down for good tommorow (unless daniel somehow scrapes up the cash to pay the server fee and remembers to do so. flying pigs etc)

anyway once you get to the actual thread concerned you can either use print to pdf or screenshot to save it a page at a time, pdf is better because you can cut and paste text from it..

yeah but if voting is anonymous the site doesnt know so it can't award trophy points.. if it can't award trophy points for voting , a medal engine linked to the trophy points can't award medals... it casn be done for posting in a given thread or section but not voting per se
