Hello, this is your invitation to join us in an exciting new roleplay!

Roleplay Title: The Jade Empire

Roleplay Genre:
Steampunk/Alternate Universe

Roleplay GM: Louanne Learning

Setting: 1858, in an alternate universe, in Shanghai, China, situated at the mouth of the Yangtze River. The Huangpu River, a tributary of the Yangtze, flows through the city.

The original walled city is Chinese-controlled, under the administration of the Qing dynasty. It retains its traditional character, with narrow lanes, low-rise wooden houses, teahouses, temples, and a dense population of Chinese residents.

Foreign settlements and Western power are found outside the city walls. The British, American and French presence—traders, missionaries, offices, churches, homes—is well established.

Shanghai is a key port for the export of tea, silk, and porcelain, and the import of opium, textiles, and manufactured goods. It’s a fusion, and a collision, of Eastern and Western commercial systems, with a current (1858) population of approximately 250,000.

Note: The story may eventually make its way to the mountains to the west, maybe to the ruins of ancient Chinese civilization. I’d like to see a grand quest in the making.

Basic Story Lore:

Shanghai’s dual nature consists of Daoist and Confucian values, Chinese opera, ancestral halls and bustling markets co-existing with Anglican churches, Western-style homes and English-language newspapers.

People tend to be classified as the Elemental People (the Yuánsù), or the Developed People (the Fādá). Examples of Elemental People are traders, farmers and hunters. The Developed People live a more multi-faceted existence based on science, philosophy and rational thought.

The British, American, and French—even if they have been there for years—are considered Foreigners.

This will be a story of conflicts—between Eastern and Western values, and between good and evil. I hope to develop strong protagonists and antagonists, and an epic battle.

Note: Despite the Chinese setting, we will be posting only in English, please.

Genre – Steampunk

Steampunk creates a world in the 19th century with advanced (often fantastical) technology based on steam power. These are plot-driven stories, relying on action, with some underlying social commentary.

Sort of a combination between fantasy and science-fiction, it’s about re-imaging the past.

The main elements of steampunk are:
  1. A story set within a world using a real or imagined version of the technology of the 19th century
  2. Technology and devices driven by steam power or counterweighted clockwork
  3. Victorian-era class and economic structures
  4. Implicit or explicit social critique
  5. An adventure-oriented plotline

An emphasis on the empowerment of individuals in the face of industrial standardization and the advance of modern bureaucratic government

Technology is an important aspect of steampunk. Feel free to invent, as long as it runs on steam power. There are a lot of ideas online. Don’t worry about being too narrowly scientific. If the technology is cool enough, the suspension of disbelief should be no problem.

Inventive technologies, a strong plot, fascinating characters, and an engrossing setting, plus a lot of fun, bring steampunk to life.

Roleplay Rules

Follow all the general rules of Writingforum.org.

Respect and be kind to one another. This is an important rule. We all have different levels of writing abilities and voices. We all have different levels of written roleplay experience.

This roleplay will be in third-person past tense and will be a ROUND ROBIN GAME.

Players take turns adding to the story in segments that are between 300 and 1500 words. Each player will be given 7 days to come up with their entry after the last one is posted. So, for example, if we have four players, you can expect to write one entry a month. Up to 7 players are allowed in this game.

Please note: AI-generated entries are strictly prohibited.

Do not post any images.

If you plan to write a big reveal or cause a major change for another player’s character, you should out of courtesy run it by them first in a private message.

Do not offer any critique of another’s post. This is not a writing workshop. But if you need clarification, ask in the OOC thread.

Let’s keep the rating PG-13. No offensive posts, please.

There is to be no reference or allusion to current world politics. This is a made-up world. Let’s concentrate on the big ideas. Please don't use your characters to espouse your own political views, but let's be true to the story, focusing on plot and character.

No God-modding. Do not make your character immune or invisible to the events of the plot, or cause any change that falsifies what has been established before. Let’s create a coherent story.

No self-indulgent tango. All characters should enjoy their moment in the spotlight. Don’t hog the story for your character.

The Mods and Admin of WF.org have the right to modify/update or change any of the above rules at anytime.

Just as I was considering creating a character from Imperial China for the Galleria. He'd be much better suited here. :)

What are the limits on the creative liberties we can take? Or rather, apart from the steampunk and political aspects, just how different are we allowed to make this world from the real Qing dynasty? I want my guy to have long hair like the guys in wuxia, but that wouldn't be accurate to the times. Would that be okay?

Yay!! I am thrilled to welcome a fantastic storyteller of your exceptional ability to this roleplay!!

This is an alternate universe, so you can definitely take liberties.

With this story, "The Rule of Cool" applies. If it is cool enough, we can take liberties with reality.

I am glad to see people joining. Do you have a 3rd player?

Thank you! No, not yet, but I am hopeful!

I'm doing a lot of research today about Shanghai in the mid-19th century. I will open the story with some action - with Rennie in the British quarter called the British Concession, and also I will have a scene in a Daoist Temple with Daiyu.

I have opened The Jade Empire - Settings and Lore thread in the Roleplay Encyclopedia forum.

So far, I have posted about the walled Chinese city in Shanghai, the City God Temple, and the British quarter of Shanghai.

Please feel free to post any research you would like to share with your fellow players in the Settings and Lore thread.

So, we have our line-up, beginning with me and the opening post of the official story, which I should have up in the next couple of days.

Here is our line-up:

1. @Louanne Learning

2. @buttercream

3. @IgnitedxSoul

4. @ellekaldwin

I assume you have all read the opening posts of this thread, and if you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to ask!

Very much looking forward to meeting you characters!

Hello, I have made the opening post to the official story! Feedback and questions welcomed.

I look forward to getting your character profiles in the next couple of days.

Rennie Macpherson was born in Scotland, so I've given him a little bit of Scottish dialect. I didn't want to overdo it, but just give a Scottish flavour to his dialogue. Here's some guidelines if you plan on writing dialogue for Rennie (which I will also post to the Lore thread):

You = ye
Of = o'
No = nae
Yes = aye
And = an'
Cannot = canna
Will not = willna
Would not = wouldna
Should not = shouldna

Oh, I did not expect to love Rennie so quickly. :love: Nor did I expect a thing between him and Daiyu?? We're off to an interesting start!!

Feel free to move me down the line if someone else gets their character/s in first. Lots of research to be done...

Nor did I expect a thing between him and Daiyu??

It's going to be a very slow developing relationship, filled with a lot of tension. I expect something to happen to throw them together again, but there will be a lot of butting of heads.

Oh, I did not expect to love Rennie so quickly.

Thank you! I'm fond on him, too!

Feel free to move me down the line if someone else gets their character/s in first.

Good point.

The line-up will take shape according to the order that I get the characters in.
