Fantastic. It really ups the drama. Interesting new characters!

To all players - just a reminder that it's best to run big character changes by the character's creators in a PM before posting. :)

(I mention this because while Locke has been mentioned, we've not yet seen him.)

@ellekaldwin - possibly could you do a character profile for Locke, for posting to the character index thread?

The ruins of the fortress made an adequate shelter for the night. A silver moonbeam shone in through an open stone archway, and Daiyu watched as Rennie walked out by way of it, into the night.

He seemed a man who preferred to be alone. Daiyu couldn’t help but wonder what had happened in his life to turn him away from people. She sat forward, as if she would get up, but then returned to her lounging position. No, she would not follow him.

New entry is up! It's mostly just a flashback, but I got a sudden rush of inspiration for Jian's backstory and how she got her own echo machine. Left the ending open so the next entries can steer the story (I also had no clue where to go next lol) anyway! I hope y'all like it!

It's incredible! Wow, what a fantastic storyteller you are. We've got Jiàn's backstory!! – including Locke’s betrayal!

There was so much depth in this entry - just a few of the lines that made me pause and consider:

He had once said that the true measure of a life was not brilliance but balance.

To mend a machine,” he told her once, “you must first still the soul within.”

In that instant, she realized the truth of the echo-machine: it was not merely a tool, nor a weapon, but a living fragment of something far greater, a spirit waiting for a hand capable of understanding and guiding it.

Dug a little bit deeper into Shaohua's heart this time around. Loverboy finally has a name! Hooray!

I originally planned on having him find something connected to the echo machines somehow, but I figured it'd be best saved for later.

The group's headed west under the assumption they're still going to the Jixi wilderness. Should we try to establish a general idea of what they'll come across there, or is that gonna be entirely go-with-the-flow?

What a perfectly lovely read! I enjoyed it so much, and it moved me for Shaohua.

Are you thinking about bringing Jun in as a character?

Well, if anyone has general ideas, they can share them here. But if we want to leave it all up to surprises, that's okay with me too!

This is just a general inquiry for everyone. But I've wanted to involve Bertrand in Locke's plan somewhat via the digging machines I brought up in my last entry. I was of the impression that the machines were underground.

I think it would be interesting if Bertrand appeared to be on Locke's side early on. I'd like to know everyone's thoughts?

As of right now, I'd prefer to keep him in the background, as his absence is important for much of Shaohua's character arc. I might consider a brief appearance once we get into the thick of things. Or maybe a touching reunion at the end? We'll see!

I like this idea! It'd be strange for Bertrand to immediately side with the group given what we've seen of him so far. Working with Locke or in his interest somehow makes the most sense for him. That gives lots of potential for character development! Excited to see what you do with it!

The dirt road cut through dense forest pressing in on both sides. Cedarheart and Shiyun, in the forward position, glided like arrows on a mission, leading the group on auto-bikes. Daiyu, the driver, and Tala, the passenger, rode at the head of the column. A strange foreboding clawed at Tala’s stomach.

The road brought them to a clearing centered by a lonely cabin. The single-story structure, built of rough-hewn pine logs, belched grey smoke by a large clay pipe through its steeply-pitched roof. Yellow chickens clucked in the yard. The flying automatons landed on the roof of a rickety...
