What made me happy today?

Today, I was going for a neighborhood stroll. I do a 4-mile loop. It takes a while. On mile three, while I was walking down the big road adjoining my neighborhood, this pudgy white-haired dude on a Rascal drives by me. He's not on the sidewalk. He's taking the right hand lane of traffic. This is something a bicycle might do, but he tops out at about 6 mph, so it's questionable if he should really be there. I'm sure there's some sort of bylaw that says it's okay. I don't really know.

Anyway, he stops in the middle of traffic, pulls out a bottle of water and slams it down. He tosses it aside—the litterbug!—and it lands pretty close to me. I see that it's not water at all. He's drinking and driving, haha. That shouldn't be funny, but I can tell this is the kind of guy who just doesn't care. He fires up his Rascal and toodles away at top speed. An XPO freight truck has to swerve around him. He rounds the curve and he's lost from sight. See you, Space Cowboy . . .

Why didn't I take a picture of this? I wish I would have. It almost seemed to be a skit of some sort.

I saw the irascible guy again today. I waved at him. He nodded back, knowingly. He was terrorizing the neighborhood up on the east side. Teenagers peek out of their windows. They're scared because he owns these streets.

What's a weekend? Sounds like devil talk.

I made veggie salad and grilled chicken with honey, Dijon mustard, soy sauce and grated garlic for dinner. Mmm.

For afters, since it's winter here and I was cold, I made a mug of hot chocolate with a teaspoon of honey, melted dark chocolate, and a pinch of cinnamon. (Also mmm). :)

For years I’ve had a vague memory of a book I read and enjoyed a long time ago, but the only impressions I had were of a white tower and strange things happening. Not useful for a book search.

Anyway, while looking up the plot of a totally different book I saw that book being compared to Lud-in-the-Mist, which is the book I’ve been searching for all along. It also turns out the book is so old it’s in the public domain. A small happiness, long awaited!

I remember a book from back in my Danny Dunn era. There was a professor who homebuilt a spaceship. I wish I could find that book. All I remember is the professor had a strange old house, he worked wonders in his lab, and there were scientific adventures.

Maybe that's what I should try to write. If I could just capture the ethos I wouldn't need a plot. Hmmm...
