What made me unhappy today ?

The fireworks in my neighborhood have been big and consistent. It's not even dark out! WTF is wrong with these people. It's such a waste of money to shoot stuff off when you can't see it. Also, my cat has been nervous since yesterday.

Found mold on my floors. Not sure how deep it goes. Hit it with bleach and it... went away I think.

Thankfully, it doesn't seem to be spreading.

And hey, at least I ruined a mold colony's day

People forget (or don't care) that what goes up must come down, including bits of expended metal. Sometimes those bits come down on top of someone, and then what? Really, firearm safety should be a required PE course.

I hope I'm right in saying that firearm safety should be a prerequisite to owning a firearm ... i.e. anyone who doesn't understand how to own one safely shouldn't be allowed to own one at all.

Having said that: I've never owned, touched, or even seen a firearm, so I hope I'm not being too strict. 😊 But guns are too dangerous to be in the hands of someone who doesn't know how to use them safely. I hope I'm right. *crosses fingers*

*gives Luxuria's cat a warm basket and a cuddle* ;)

Agreed about shooting off fireworks in the daytime. You may as well have a blindfold on.

In LA it’s standard procedure for LAPD patrol units to park under freeways and other bridges during the mad minute at new year to ensure officers are safe from falling lead

How fast does a bullet fall? It goes straight up, loses momentum, stops, and then falls at terminal velocity, right?
The problem is a lot of people doing celebratory shooting don't fire straight up or even close. When a bullet is arcing it can retain a lot more velocity. And while this is an extreme example, the US Air Force used a weapon called the Lazy Dog in Vietnam, which basically dropped a whole bunch of 50 cal bullets, propelled primarily by gravity, as a sort of non-explosive cluster bomb. For troops in the open it could be quite devastating.

Quite agree. Celebratory fire is infantile.

If you want another slant on gun irresponsibility, check out the controversy over the Sig Sauer P320. Many — myself included — believe those guns can and do go off in the holster without anything pulling the trigger.

The latest incident was about a week ago. A school resource officer in Ceres, California bumps her handgun with her backpack. Video shows her hands were nowhere near her holstered P320 when it discharged into her leg. A tragedy. The police officer did nothing unsafe or wrong.

Many law enforcement departments have banned the P320. Sig says it's impossible for the P320 to fire without pulling the trigger. They continue to manufacture and promote it.

As I like to say, nine out of ten trauma surgeons who smoke Camels agree the P320 is perfectly safe. In other words, I have my doubts.

The P320 is carried fully cocked, typically with a round in the chamber, without a conventional safety.

There seems to be a split decision in the courts , an Atlanta federal jury found against sig and awarded 2.35 mil in damages to the former marine who got shot in the leg, however in Berrios vs Sig the court found for Sig and that officer Berrios had indeed pulled the trigger.

I remember many years ago that there used to be a defect on British army issue browning Hi Powers, where if the trigger were pulled with the safety catch engaged the trigger sear didn’t reengage properly so when the safety catch was then released the pistol would fire.

UGH ... I'm so mad right now. =( (We really need a "so angry, steam is coming out of ears" icon for this. This one ... ... just doesn't cut it).

It's Sunday here. I tried to log into my credit card account this morning to pay a bill, only to be told that my password was incorrect.

So, I changed my password ... TWICE ... and the credit card company's website kept on telling me that my password was incorrect. (And no, I didn't mistype it).

So, I tried calling them ... and after 5 minutes of having to sit through the slowest, stupidest menu in the history of phone menus, I was told "You called outside of our operating hours, try again later."

All right, fine ... so I looked up their website and found a "Scams Hub", which is open 24/7. So, I called that ... and again, I was told "You called outside our operating hours. Call again later."

GRR!!! *pulls hair out*

So why are these ... arseholes lying in such an obvious way? If this so-called "Scams Hub" is open 24/7, then they answer the phone. If they're not, they should fix their own goddamn website! I don't appreciate them wasting my time, especially with something as critical as this.

This icon ( ) is inadequate. Here's how I'm really feeling right now:

Sigh. Sorry I had to go nuclear like that. Back to our usually scheduled programming. :)

Sigh. Please don't get me wrong: I understand that companies are closed on the weekend (especially Sundays), and I understand why, and fully support that. But in that case, don't tell me that a specific section is open 24/7, and then close it, and don't tell people until they waste their time trying to get through.

By the way, I tried later in the day and they were still closed.

I now have a plan: I'll call them tomorrow, get the card issue sorted out politely, and then give them a shellacking about how their so-called "scam hub" is a scam. (It says it's open 24/7, and it's clearly not).

What if someone, somehow, has my card information? What if they're going wild with it right now, and I can't do anything about it ... and I couldn't even report it because these people are closed? Or maybe I'm over-reacting (sorry if I am) ... but not knowing what's going on is driving me crazy with worry. :(

About a quarter of households own at least one firearm in Canada. Most common in rural areas, naturally. Growing up in the bush, pretty much everyone I knew had some connection to hunting. Extended family and neighbours bagging a moose most years and sharing with everyone (sorry, moose), friends and/or their parents hunting deer, small game. Even a couple bear hunters. It was just a normal, expected thing.

Long before my vegetarian days, I'd shoot a partridge here and there with a 20-gauge shotgun. Also, target shooting is loads of fun.

I don't recall learning to shoot because I was so young when instruction began. My family includes a lot of LEOs and hunters, so firearms were as familiar to me as eggs are to most people. I live where both open and concealed carry are legal. This makes me happy, so I'm probably posting in the wrong thread.

I'm in the low double-digits for gun ownership. All of them back home, of course, Japan basically doesn't allow private firearms ownership (licensing, the guns stay locked up at the gun club when not in use, ditto the ammo. They do call out the hunting clubs from time to time when a bear shows up in town though)

I'm unhappy (and furious) over news I've heard over the weekend. :(

Last Friday night, while a group of about twenty people were sitting down to dinner at one of the oldest synagogues in my home town of Melbourne, an utter nutter poured flammable liquid on the front door and tried to set the place on fire. Luckily someone inside noticed the smoke, raised the alarm, and everyone made it out the back door and called the emergency services. No-one was killed or harmed (save possible trauma and/or smoke inhalation), but the damage is considerable. Police have CCTV footage, but no-one has been arrested or charged.

On the same night, a Jewish-owned restaurant was besieged by so-called "protestors" who hurled abuse, chairs and tables, and nearly broke windows. The police were called. No-one was arrested or charged.

On the following morning, cars were set alight in another part of town. I've no idea why. Once again, no-one has been arrested or charged.

This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened. It's been happening ever since October 7th, and the police shrug and do nothing. Why do we fund the police for doing nothing?

Ahem. Sorry to rant. Back to your previously scheduled programming ...

That sucks Rath. It's overwhelming and frustrating when you start to see major red flags like that and can't do anything. It feels like every day sometimes with the global news stream.

I'm feeling a bit mouldy with the world right now too. I'm housebound, can't walk very far, but not bad enough to qualify for an NHS wheelchair because I can walk small distances round the house most of the time. This means I also don't qualify for a wheelchair assessment so I'm left kind of guessing about what would be suitable for my needs. I'd kind of given up for now because I don't have a reason to have to leave the house but the cheapo attendant chair I have for hospital visits is falling to bits so I risked buying a new one online but with a self propelling option too. I let myself get a bit excited about it, imagining that it would feel a bit like riding a bike again, freewheeling, and I could get spokey dokeys and maybe not go far but at least manage a bit on smooth surfaces and... it actually really sucks. It's painful and slow and I can't manage it at all. It gives me a tiny bit more freedom to, say, adjust my own position in a room and maybe move up and down the sandwich aisle myself in the food court which is definitely something, but I let my imagination get ahead of me and now I'm feeling REALLY out of sorts.
