Workshop rules

The purpose of this thread is to give more detail on the major rules that govern the workshop, the general forum rules also apply here as they do throughout the boards.

By posting, you are granting limited use: Specifically, retention or removal of that piece of writing from the site is solely at the discretion of the site administration team. We do not usually remove work that has been replied to as it is disrespectful to those who took the time to give critique

Only your own work can be posted here and you must own the copyright: work generated by AIs and bots is also prohibited. Also work for critique must be posted in the forum, no links to third party sites are allowed. For those who are unaware, you own a "copyright" as soon as you create something. You don't need to register it with the Library of Congress and receive an official certificate of copyright to post here. If you created it, you already own the copyright.

One for one: Each member can start one thread in the workshop without having to first give critique, after that you have to give at least one piece of worthwhile constructive critique per every thread you make asking for critique on your own work. The best guidance we can offer is to give as you'd wish to receive.

Receiving critique graciously: There's no compulsion on anyone to take any advice they are given, but you must treat the giver with courtesy even if you disagree. Remember that they have taken time out of their day to try to help you improve your writing, that alone deserves your respect.

If you don't want critique don't ask for it: By posting in the workshop it is implied that you want other posters to critique your work.

Length: There's no maximum length (other than the characters limit inherent in the software), but it's our experience that around 2K words is the optimal length for an excerpt, but this is guidance not a rule. Please state how long your piece is (word count) in the title

Don't argue with another poster's critique
: If you don't agree thats fine, say what you think of the piece in your critique, but the the purpose of a critique thread is to help the OP improve their writing, not to get into it with xyz member because 'someone is wrong on the internet.'

Critique the writing not the content: This is particularly true in the nonfiction board. Critique should focus on how well they are expressing and communicating facts and ideas, not what you think of the ideas themselves.

Prohibited content: No paedophilia or children in sexual situations (posting this content will lead to a ban and a report to the relevant authorities if appropriate). No detailed descriptions of bestiality, necrophilia, or rape. No other illegal content - e.g detailed instructions on how to build a bomb, no porn or explicit sex remember kids could be reading this stuff. We ask you to be sensible about violence, fight scenes are fine, but torture porn is not.

I don't see this mentioned anywhere and I just want to make sure before I post. Are we requiring trigger warnings for anything? I pulled an old piece (of mine of course) from the old site that I had lost and edited a bit and I'd like to post it here, but the subject matter is death and cancer and I don't want to break any rules or hurt anyone accidentally.

What even is the "Literary" tag? 🤔

I agree to these things, which are sensible. What I have for submitting is lengthy but not what I think I could publish or would try to. So it really is only available as a sample, and I take critique seriously that it can influence me to write better, as it would be doing. Yet the lengthy writing I started has these first portions written long ago, and now just edit a little bit. I do not have any idea of the word count. I will stop showing more of it if it seems to be too long and I am asked to stop.

Am I right to assume then that this site will not be resurrecting the erotic workshop from the previous iteration?

Yes. Erotica is a massive pain in the hoop to moderate and attracts ever creep on the internet

We may one day look at an invite only board but it’s not a priority at the minute

That makes sense. It was valuable for me on the prior board, but it just isn't worth it if it will be that much of a headache for the reasons you've discussed.

I am looking for guidelines for the length of critiques. What is the minimum length for acceptable critiques? Sometimes the best advice is short and to the point without going into detail.

There's no minimum length really. We just expect it to be thorough and well-thought-out. That might involve details or broad strokes, if that's what it calls for. What we don't want is the bare minimum "I liked it" bullshit. So long as there's decent effort, it will be appreciated. We don't legislate it too heavily or anything.

Okay, I have a weird question. On the old forum, we were able to see how many workshop 'credits' we have. How are we keeping track of 1:1? Because I think I have 2-3 credits now? But I am not sure if I still have the free post? Or if my showcase post counts for that one. Please let me know. Because I am curious how much workshop credit I have. Thanks!

We don’t have the credit system mostly because it was a piece of shit and conflicted with everything else. We’re not too worried about exact numbers anyway, just people taking the piss, they’re easy to spot because they have eleventy workshop pices and no crit given.

On point show case doesn’t count so your mulligan is still available, but in general I’d say that critiquing the work of others make you a better writer so we should all do it as much as possible anyway rather than only as a transactional 1-1
