The purpose of this thread is to give more detail on the major rules that govern the workshop, the general forum rules also apply here as they do throughout the boards.
By posting, you are granting limited use: Specifically, retention or removal of that piece of writing from the site is solely at the discretion of the site administration team. We do not usually remove work that has been replied to as it is disrespectful to those who took the time to give critique
Only your own work can be posted here and you must own the copyright: work generated by AIs and bots is also prohibited. Also work for critique must be posted in the forum, no links to third party sites are allowed. For those who are unaware, you own a "copyright" as soon as you create something. You don't need to register it with the Library of Congress and receive an official certificate of copyright to post here. If you created it, you already own the copyright.
One for one: Each member can start one thread in the workshop without having to first give critique, after that you have to give at least one piece of worthwhile constructive critique per every thread you make asking for critique on your own work. The best guidance we can offer is to give as you'd wish to receive.
Receiving critique graciously: There's no compulsion on anyone to take any advice they are given, but you must treat the giver with courtesy even if you disagree. Remember that they have taken time out of their day to try to help you improve your writing, that alone deserves your respect.
If you don't want critique don't ask for it: By posting in the workshop it is implied that you want other posters to critique your work.
Length: There's no maximum length (other than the characters limit inherent in the software), but it's our experience that around 2K words is the optimal length for an excerpt, but this is guidance not a rule. Please state how long your piece is (word count) in the title
Don't argue with another poster's critique: If you don't agree thats fine, say what you think of the piece in your critique, but the the purpose of a critique thread is to help the OP improve their writing, not to get into it with xyz member because 'someone is wrong on the internet.'
Critique the writing not the content: This is particularly true in the nonfiction board. Critique should focus on how well they are expressing and communicating facts and ideas, not what you think of the ideas themselves.
Prohibited content: No paedophilia or children in sexual situations (posting this content will lead to a ban and a report to the relevant authorities if appropriate). No detailed descriptions of bestiality, necrophilia, or rape. No other illegal content - e.g detailed instructions on how to build a bomb, no porn or explicit sex remember kids could be reading this stuff. We ask you to be sensible about violence, fight scenes are fine, but torture porn is not.
