What made me unhappy today ?

Newspaper typos are nothing new. This one is a classic:

And, from the "When Proofreaders Lose It" department:

Im feeling a little better, and am going to work today...
I swing my feet out of bed, only to step in dog poop 🥴

(Washed my feet and took my brand new carpet cleaner vacuum thing for a spin)

I think its a sign i should go back to bed....

But what bothers me most is that spell-check ought to be a simple basic part of the process.

True, and a spell-check will catch things. But if you want a newspaper story to be correct (rather than close enough), you need proofreaders to catch the usual it's/its, there/their, etc. I'm sure we all know the drill! ;)

But it seems that just about no-one in the media has proofreaders anymore.

My point is that they don't even bother to run a simple spell-check. I know that proofreaders and editors do a lot more.

I agree with you on both counts, but my point is that newspapers used to have proofreaders and editors who would do all this stuff.

Now that they don't, you get what you get. :)

Happens to me all the time. At least barefoot will stop you in your tracks. Socks or shoes, you might track it all over the house. My dog is of the tootsie roll size so it isn't always obvious.
Gentle readers, she does not own a dog...
