As an American expat of limited income, I know I owe no tax but must prove that annually. When my mother died I came into a paltry fortune that was nevertheless significantly more than my annual income. The tax accounting firm charged me roughly two weeks' pay to confirm that I owed Uncle Sugar nothing.A tax accountant does our returns. She saves us way more than enough to pay her fee. My husband and I are both capable of doing math (yeah, even me), but she knows tax law and comes up with deductions we'd have no way of knowing are available.
Better than me missing a line and losing the whole bunch or ending up in prison I guess.
