My extended childhood family was loud and extroverted, delighting in boisterous arguments. My children, their spouses, and my husband are articulate but introverted. A quiet life is better for my disposition and psyche.

Molly Malone is real. Here's a picture of her.

I agree that the statue is real. But whether it's based on a real person is ... difficult to prove, to say the least. *shrug*

But personally, I don't think it matters if she wasn't a real person. She stands for lots and lots of real Irish fishwives who were strong and resilient and never gave up, and that's more important. :)

The US has brought in a new citizenship test. The Washington Post set up a little quiz for its readers with ten questions from the citizen test.
I got 8 out of 10 correct!

The Post won't let me play. :(

The Post wouldn't let me play, either. Maybe we both need a subscription? :-\

I looked up a couple of other ten-question citizenship tests. Super easy, 10/10 every time. Seems odd that any question on such a test would require someone to remember any date outside of 1776.

JAYS WIN JAYS WIN

And in convincing fashion. Way to go, fellers !

the new test was made longer and more difficult

The USCIS update confirms that the 2025 version of the naturalization civics test requires a minimum of 12 correct answers to pass — double the previous requirement of six. The test will now include 20 questions, up from 10.

The changes to the U.S. citizenship test stem from one of President Trump’s executive orders titled “Protecting the United States from Foreign Terrorist Entry and Other National Security and Public Safety Threats.”

My father was a Border Patrolman back in the fifties and sixties when the US Border Patrol was an elite group of highly trained men and not a bunch of masked thugs called ICE. He later became an criminal investgator for the INS anti-smuggling unit. He told me once that citizenship tests went easy on candidates: if a person couldn't answer a question, the examiner simply asked a different question.

What a difference half a century later.

Hmm. We might be skating close to the edge of political discussion which is verboten on the forum, and for good reason. Since I can barely stand up on skates myself, I think I'll move away from the thin ice.

I need to get up and rebraid my hair anyway. Got to present a workshop to a local writers group in- oh, hell, fifteen minutes. (Leaps up and runs.)

Not everyone will agree with that, but at least your opinion is not vanilla.

I just made some deep-fried, battered cauliflower to bring to dinner at my sister's today. I have a nice beer-batter recipe
